Im in the market for a portable generator. Was leaning toward the troy built brand from lowes. My question is are there aftermarket exhaust systems to help make them more quieter, or what all can you do to quiet then down?

Changing the exhaust will only do so much. If you buy a loud generator you will always have a loud generator. I have tried bigger exhaust, and they do get a little quieter, but not quiet by any means.

would building a dog house sorta speak to put the unit in, piping the exhusts out and piping to the air intake in, and adding a vent or to to let heat out work, or might this cause it to over heat. I hunt on 40 acres and i would like power, but i want it to be as quiet as possible to not brodcast over the whole piece of land.

If you build an enclosure for it I would add a intake fan on the enclosure. You want to make sure cool air is getting in. You can pick up a small 12 volt fan, I used the on my houseboat to get more air to the generator. The ones I used were tubular in shape, and would fit right onto a piece of 4" pvc

Now I'm just a big ole' idiot but couldn't you leave the unit outside and just run the exhaust into the "doghouse" lined with fiberglass or something? Baffles? heck I don't know...but isn't most of the noise exhaust related??...could you pipe it into 2 big car mufflers? Just throwing ideas out there..good luck
hmmmmm.....

If 3000 watts will do you, look into the Yamaha's. They are very quiet with no modifications. I have 2 freinds that use them to run their travel trailers and the work good winter or summer. You wont even notice they are running.

won't help a lot, on the cheaper generators the engine is loud even if you quite the exhaust. I tried a lot of stuff on the one I had on my bow fishing boat, and it was still loud.

I see....when I was a kid I had an old Honda 50 ( yes the one with the fat seat and folding handlebars) when I wanted to go stealth mode ( usually at night and up to no good) I shoved a real long piece of water hose over the tailpipe and wrapped it around the seat.... Sounded like a sewing machine...lol....but it wasn't very loud to begin with....:::::praying::: Hope my 65 year old mother doesn't read this....I probably still have a beating or 2 coming...
hmmmmm.....

Onan call your local Cummins disributor they are one of the best genarators you can buy. Dont take my word one this look at what the military uses also look behind any hospital and or home depot ect ect ect. Onan makes generators that are affordable and quite also. The other option is to buy a used one out of a RV you will not see a honda or yamaha in a Rv they are not reliable enough it will be a genarac or onan My brother bought a 5000watt still under factory warranty for $600. There is one on craiglist right now for $350. You could carry on a conversation while standing over it with it running.
Never been to a camping world. I prefer Dick's to be honest.

If you can find an onan or genrack at a fair price that is not junk buy it.. I agree.
My Kipor has done me great -- weeks on the RV, months going to the property, and in houston running 4 fridges and freezers for almost 3 weeks straight.

After all the added exhaust accessories etc, etc,.....go buy a honda, they are worth the extra money.

The one my brother bought was in austin (he lived there at the time) and it came with everything and a platform also. The onan will last alot longer than the honda and when it is 25 years old you can still get parts for it unlike a honda or yamaha. I am not bashing them I own a 1000watt honda that was my grandfathers and it is an excellent generator. Compared side by side onan is clearly the leader in quality and service and last, noise.
