I was driving home today, and noticed a bunch of buzzards on the side of the road about a mile from my house. As I got up close enough to see, there was a pile of coyotes on the side of the road.
Now, I don't coyote hunt, but I have no problems with it what so ever. Matter of fact there are quite a few out here where I live and I have thought of trying it myself. I would maybe try tanning a hide or two, but what do you 'yote hunters do with the carcasses after you shoot them?
I hope none of you dump them on the side of the road!!!

Some people here hang them from a fence post. I have never asked why.

There are three different reasons/explanations that I know of and they are legit except one: to deter other coyotes. I have never seen another coyote shy away from a dead coyote...not in this region anyway.
(1) People once tried to keep deer from their fields/gardens by hanging dead yotes from the fence. It worked and would work better if the hunter would rupture the urine gland. I know most of you varmint hunters have noticed that there isn't much urine left after you shoot a yote, though, right?
(2) During seasons when yotes were real bad, a hunter would hang yotes on the fences to prove to the landowner that he had killed the yotes bugging the owner.

What you saw isn't the result of 'casual' predator hunting. That is the result of contest hunters dumping carcasses after a contest. They're going to ruin hunting for the rest of us if they keep doing that!!! Why these guys can't go back to the land they hunted and dump there is beyond me.. Just think about a person that is borderline on whether they think hunting is ok or not. They spin by and see a stack of dead critters and can't understand why anybody would do that, let alone leave 'em for everybody to see.

+1 Personaly i have skinned and tanned my share of hides that if Im gona tan one i will pay to have it done. However, having all the hides i care to have i take my critter carcasses and dump them on my own property in the same place each time. Usually i attract the attention of buzzards on my way back there and have a few landing on the ground behind me as i leave. They see my truck coming and its like a dinner bell. Yah stacken em on the side of the road is a one way ticket to anti hunting hell. I also dont like to see a gutted deer carcas on the back of a hitch carryer with the tongue flappin in the breeze. Do i think we should appologise for being hunters, no. Do i apreciate gay parades on TV, no i detest it and dont want to see it, and im sure anti hunters feel the same way about a dead deer strapped to the back of a vehicle in plain view. Without amunition the oposition cant fight. We really are our own worst enemy. Skinner

I am not real sure but i think there has been a law passed to make it illegal in texas now to hang them on a fence in plain sight. If anyone knows for sure i would like to know if I am right or wrong

no law...some people just dont think seeing it is right...makes no difference to me, a dead yote is a dead yote
as for leaving them on the side of a road piled up...i agree, going to screw it up for the rest of us

Maggie is correct, there is no law about hanging them on the fence.
Pyledriver and Skinner are right also, it is slobs that do such things and they either do not care what the non-hunting public thinks, or they believe that things will never change here in Texas and that we will always be able to hunt and do things the way we have done in the past.
They are the ones that are going to kill hunting for everyone else.

No they won't.
Lora and I saw this one November on our way back from a doe hunt with 7mag down at LSTO.
we had stopped by the ranch where I do my javelina hunts and on our way out, we saw a pile of 2 javelina 3 or 4 foxes and a badger up against the fence that someone had dumped out.
Some folks think it is some kind of Macho thing.

I also hung the last one that I shot on a fence post and found that it didn't seem to keep deer or coyotes out of the area.
On the other hand, if you want to keep coyotes in an area, leave an occasional dead hog for them to eat.
I once shot a coyote that came into my food plot and just let it lay there the rest of the morning. I later watched two bucks cross that same food plot and neither seemed alarmed by it.
And for what it's worth, I once read that deer run with their tails up to deter coyotes and other predators from chasing them. The belief is that a healthy "flag" is a signal the animal is plenty able to face a prolonged chase and avoid being taken down.

I agree that it is stupid to put a pile of yotes by the road. Thats only a target for the PETA folks. I do shoot every yote I see. They have gotten after our calves 2 times this year.

Never heard anything like that, and not sure how anyone came up with that, but a white tail runs with its tail up, because that flash of white is used as a warning signal to other deer in the area.
One of the big reasons why that unless a person is hunting in ther snow, white is not a good color to wear when hunting white tails.

i skin em or leave em lay. Never even considered dumpin on the road. I will ALWAYS dump the carcass somewhere out of plainsight. Heck I dont even like to see a gut pile when Im at the lease, why do you think most people dig it out of plainview and normal travel.

We skin ours, if they are mangy leave them or after a contest..bring them back here to a dump we have in the back. Seeing one or several on a fence doesnt bother me, shows at least that landowner is trying to control them.
As for the deer tails, yup warning to the other deer. There has been nothing else in the area & the deer run off with their tails up & the others take notice & haul off too.

Leave 'em where they lay, unless I'm going to be hunting the next day, then they get brought back to the house and dumped on the edge of our hayfield. Then I can sit on the back porch with a spotlight after a cpl of hours and shoot the yotes that come in to see what is dead.

The government trapper was about right. I also heard that there once was a bounty, and that hangin them on the fence adn reporting where they were was how you go paid... have heard that for years, never took the time to see if that was ever true, but if so, tradition would explain why it's done today.
How I do it, depends on where I am and the landowners wishes... some landowners want the hung, some hidden or removed, some left were they are or in a specific spot...
I did speak with a county officer the other day that said they were now actively seeking who was dumping them over bridges, as that was littering, regardless of the fact that they were biodegradeable, as it was damamging the water source. We have drug off dead cows over the years, never thought about it that way. But you can't burn them anymore either.... oh well, there's always lightning strikes
