I shot a Cotton Tail a week or so ago, and another last night. I was going to thaw the first one and skin the second one and eat them for supper last night, but when i was skinning the second one i found a huge worm under the skin that resembled the worms you often see in the throat and nasal cannal of a deer. The area it was in had turned brown and looked rank as heck. I stopped right there and threw it away. I think those are bot fly larva, am i right? Skinner

Those are probably what I call wools. I usually wait a couple of weeks after a good hard freeze before hunting, but I would think they would be gone by now. I'm with you, throw it out. Might not harm you, but they are nasty looking.
back when we used to eat housecats we marinated them in louisiana hot sauce and soy sauce then season them with lemon pepper........then onto the grill slow cooking them 3 hours........excellent folded in tortillas and pico de gallo----Newgulf

What are your rabbit populations this year?
I think ours hit rock bottom from a high of ~8 in a 50yrd radius to ~1 in a 100 yrd radius.
Interesting result is owl and hawk numbers are way down now too.

I always heard that was a summer time occurrence, but it has been warm this year around here.

The big worms are the same as the grubs that get on cattle, Bot Fly larvae.
They don't hurt the meat, except for the spot where they come into contact with it.
Just cut that piece off and the rest of the rabbit is just fine.
If you don't want to take the chance, stop shooting rabbits.

I would bet that fire ants have something to do with the dwindling population.

Rabbit and Hare populations go thru 7 year cycles, the population will build up for 7 years then crash, fireants play a role but not much of one.
We have tons of fire ants on our place south of Azle and I killed 8 or 9 cotton tails out of our garden this year.
As for the Bot Fly Larvae/Cattle grub, they do not harm the meat except the small area they come in contact with.
We eat rabbits year round and have been doing so since I was a kid in the 50's, it has not affected me in any way.
As I said to Skinner, if you are worried about it, don't shoot them.

I used to believe the "wait until the first frost" idea until I talked to a professor who was teaching a wildlife management class. He said you can find parasites of all kinds in a rabbit all year round and proved it on a rabbit we took two him killed on an icy day much like today.
Since then, I'm with Crazyhorse: Cut out the bad part and eat them when you want them.

Anyone ever seen a rabbit gutted without skinning or cutting one open? A buddy of ours swore up and down he could do it. Well low and behold we went out hunting got us a rabbit and put him to the test. Basically he started squeezing from the neck down squeezing all the organs down towards the business end. Once he got there he started to swing the rabbit by its head. After a couple good swings all the guts came flying out of the business end. It was freakin hilarious!
As for the worms, it would have became food for the buzzards!

Do you know me? It is how my Grandfather did it, and thus how I have done it from the first time I went rabbit hunting.

i have found them also and have heard the rabbits are fine to eat and should go away after the first or second freeze. but i have never found one that affected the meat. does kind of freak ya out though. you could turn it into your own bizzare food.
I once drank muddy water out of a hoof print and was dang glad to get it.

I've heard of gutting them that way but have never seen it. I love rabbits so would love to know an easier way to clean them.

Hold the rabbit under its front legs squeezing the body working your way down crushing the ribs. As you continue pressing downward the guts will pop out. If they don't, then sling the rabbit downward and they'll fly out.
Heard there has to be a hard freeze for several days to kill the worms, but I've seen them even after a week of sub freezing temperatures. They can probably stay warm enough once they're inside the rabbit. Don't think they're a problem if the meat is cooked well.

There's nothing better than chicken-fried rabbit, mashed taters, gravy, pinto beans, and homemade bisquits.
Of course, we live in God's country and the only animals that stink are wild hogs...and that's because they want to.
