Hey guys and gals,
I'm going elk hunting in Colorado this September. I just talked to one of the guys I am going with and he wants to setup a satellite camp for the two of us in an area that is too far away to make in and out in one day. Can you please help me put together a checklist of the items needed. I pretty much know what I all I need but I might overlook something. Also, I do know that a tent can be the difference between good and hell. Do you recommend a tent that isn't too expensive?
Thanks, CM

Go over Sneaky's list on the Group Elk Hunt thread, or just pm him, he's not doing anything.
I'm sure there are more experienced tent experts on here than me. Eureka (if they're still around) seems to be a decent quality backpacking tent, before you get into the uber, mountain climbing, who cares it's Daddy's money type expensive stuff. I would think, if the weather doesn't take a dump on you in September that a decent sleeping bag and a good fly-type shelter would be enough. Of course, that's if you're a young-ish man. Me, I gotta have all kinds of crap at my age.

MREs/Clif bars, H20, zippo, tent, sleeping mat, crank up flashlight or 2, satellite phone (pizza hut might deliver..ya never know). Doesn't take much if you know you can get back to base camp if need be.

BTW, I'm looking for 2 tents. One that will fit my dad and I comfortably at base camp and a light one for hiking with. More concerned about the tent bc I've had a bad tent before and it was miserable.

Don't underestimate the value of baby wipes. I'm also a big fan of flip flops when I'm living out of a tent. Makes the midnight pee a little easier.

Easier to get 2 small 1 person tents. stays warmer and way easier to set up and anchor. This ^^^^^^ for sure. You can find good quality mountaineering 3 or 4 season tents at discounted prices if you look at places like Campmor, Sierratradingpost, Backcountry and the like. Even REI has had some great deals in the past. IMO, there are 4 things you don't want to go cheap on "QUALITY" speaking but can still find good deals on if you research it well when it comes to backpacking: 1) Hiking/Hunting boots 2) Backpack 3) Tent 4) Sleeping bag.

A lot if this depends on how far you are hunting from the truck.
Hydration- I run inline swayers. But a pump works better in limited water area. Jetboil and fuel
Crocs Extra socks Small roll of duck tape---3' tops
Rain gear Puffy jacket Extra boxers TP Paracord 10-20' Kill kit First aid kit/fire starter Etc lithium batteries
Tent wise- I run MH hoopla but most likely moving to kifauri or similar tipi Sleeping bag- MH 30 degree GD Pad- REI inflatable Spotting scope and tripod Food
Pretty much all fits into 3500 cu bag

Ounces count when you do this and these are all good suggestions.
My #1 advice is to start getting into better shape than you think you need to be in. And, even then, it often isn't good enough.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

Just because I haven't seen it mentioned here, don't forget to bring a couple orange vests and hats. If you're forgetful like me, a few extras will save you from having to venture back into town in order to hunt.

There are several good lists on the internet. They are great starting points.
I second one man tents, baby wipes, crocs, and a good lightweight sleeping pad. I like my Neorest pad. Quality lightweight sleeping bag is money well spent too.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

Most the UL single man end up with very little gear room. Majority of vestibules might fit your boots. I'd get two- two man UL tents or one 4 man tipi and divide gear up. What ever the person rating is divide it by two to account for gear

They make quite a few that are in the 92ish-105ish" range now. Tight wad buddy who won't come stay at the cabin with us stays in one that's pretty big for a solo. I think I know what kind it is, but waiting for him to return a text.
