There was a kennel in Texas that rented bird dogs. I have a few NSTRA friends who handles dogs for mutual friends. There's a trainer who trials some dogs for customers.
The burden is just to great for. I would never do it. How about you?

Not a chance on borrowing or renting someone elses or renting mine. I have handled a dog for a friend I trained with though.

I have a couple of friends that I hunt with that also have dogs that I trust to handle my dogs correctly. If I have a dog that needs the work, I will send my dogs with them and vice-versa. I trust both these guys to do it right and bring them home. My dogs know them in the field as well as they know me. But they are the only two.

It would be rare for special circumstances, but to a friend who handles dogs and that I know and trust I have no problem. When I got back from my three week hunting road trip with Dash last season, I leant Dash to my breeder's husband to hunt in Montana with four other Vizslas on a month long trip. He was hunted on wild birds every day and always wearing a tracking collar. The experience was good for him. I have also been offered a dog on loan from a forum member when mine was down. I refused but honored to have received the offer.

Only if the person had spent a lot of time helping me train the dog and knew what they were doing.

I run two dogs that aren't mine a couple of times a year. I don't need to run them, but the dogs sure enjoy it. So I make a point to take them out before the season is over every year.

No way I would let any of mine go with anyone that doesn't spend time with them, If I don't know that they will respond to you under any & all circumstances, they ain't goin without me.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

I should have added one of the dogs belongs to my nephew, and the other belongs to a friend I've known since high school. I do it as a favor to them, and their dogs. The dogs know me very well, and are always excited to go with me.

Its a good question. I would have had to hunt with the dog a lot or helped trained it to feel comfortable to take a friends dog, and usually then only if he couldnt go on the hunt but wants his dog to get some work. I have let a few friends take out my dogs a few times, but only when they were up there in years and I knew they would stay in the county. If I take a buddys dog, I usually hunt it by itself so I can keep eyes on it at all times. I had one younger dog I was helping train chase a rabbit and hit a working pen fence bar head on wobbled it but it ended up being fine with just a small cut, and another buddy's dog got a big cut on a fence out in the middle of nowhere panhandle and I stapled it up on the tailgate --- would attest there are some risks to it for sure.

I would loan out my Wife before my Bird Dog. Grew up with some of the best Eng Setters ever hunted behind and loved them to death. Only time I ever saw my dad cry was when we lost a dog.

It could be a double whammy in NSTRA depending on the shooting. The friend could shoot you out of a placement. I have mutual friends named Fred and Jim in NSTRA. Jim is now handling Fred's dog in some trials. They've both been through my instinctive shooting lesson, so it should not be a problem with them. Rob Martin trains a lot of NSTRA dogs and handles some of their dogs. I don't know how he shoots, but he wins a bunch of trials.

I get asked often to take other people's dogs with me on my trips. I've done it with no problems. I've also loaned out some of my dogs in the past to close hunting buddies. People who have asked me to take their hounds know and respect my experience.

I have had a couple of customers who have come out and spent time with my dogs and when they show me they can handle the dog I make them a deal to use my dog at my place on quail.
Speaking of Quail I am getting my last bunch this Friday and would more for members of the THF who can pick up at my place on Friday afternoon or Saturday. I am not buying any birds I do not have orders for and I must hear from you by Wednesday afternoon.

Very select few. I have ran a couple of my training partners dogs in trials and took them on wild bird training trips. All these trainingsand trials are on horse back so I feel I can see the dogs better than hunting and I'm not affraid to run one down on a horse if he/she is blowing me off. I generally have more dogs than I need anyway so hunting is always just my personal dogs.

Only certain brands though that have been approved by the AFTCA and Open Trials and of course, The American Field.

The collar itself might make them a little more biddable.

They do but they are the limited to pre approved collars. The receiver must be turned off and the judges carry the receiver. If the handler asks for the receiver judgement ceases and the dog is no longer in contention and is picked up.I have heard the biddable thing brought up before and their May be some merit to it but two things, #1 I hunt my dogs the same way as I would trial them, broke dog work. #2 i haven't seen it really make a difference in running dogs, judging them or hunting them. They are either broke to WSF or they aren't. Kind of like being pregnant, you either are or you are not, can't be half pregnant or pregnant when you feel like it. You is or you is not!
