I'm in the market for an .308 AR and looking for recommendations, I'm looking to spend about $1500-$2000. What should I look for in a .308 ar! I've read so u want to buy an ar, does any of that apply to the .308! Thanks

My vote goes to the CMMG MK3 CBR. 16" with full length free float keymod rail system and one of the best triggers in the game. It's on the low end of your budget at around $1600. I've shot steel out go 800 yards with the 16" barrel with no problem. Bullets still run right around 2500 fps compared to 2650ish out of a 24" barrel. I'll take 8" shorter barrel over 150 fps all day long. This is mine as it sets right now, but the CBR comes with a Magpul ACS-L collapsible stock from the factory which makes it even more compact but I put a fixed stock on mine for long range purposes.

I really love my Armalite AR-10T. Does everything I ask it to, minus being a light gun.

I echo bob's comment. Republic Arsenal has been at the last several D/FW gunshows with Armalite AR10A Model DEF10 rifles. These are the newer Armalite AR10 that uses Magpul PMAGs. I bought one from them for $939 so you can add all sorts of mounts, optics and ammo and be well under your budget. And it feels much lighter than my previous DPMS models. It weighs in at 7.9lbs before adding goodies to it.

depends on what you want your AR to do. My 24 inch does 2700 fps with 11 ES. I have reached out to 1k with it. If you want to go further the velocity matters

For off the shelf .308 AR, I'm going with a DPMS G2 Recon. I really believe the future of the. 308 AR is in formats closer to AR-15 patterns. This is where the G2 is going and other manufacturers are following suit. What you get is AR-15 parts, like trigger groups, that are compatible with the .308 rifle, and they're lighter.
At the end of the day, stay away from guns that are "too proprietary". Do a search on some of the troubles some guys are having trying to get parts for their M&P 10s. S&W ain't playing ball like they should be.

You can point to problems with probably any manufacturer. I've never owned a SIG 716...would like one, never owned one and probably won't. I used to be a fan of DPMS despite the bad rep they have, until my last Gen 1 Recon..brand new rifle...BRAND NEW...and it wouldn't even chamber a round due to an out of spec chamber. That spoke volumes about their quality control or lack there of. My current .308 is the Armalite DEF10 and while i haven't gotten to shoot it yet it's much lighter than the DPMS and at least chambers a round Earl

There was a guy on here not long ago that had issues with his sig 716 but I couldn't find the thread but you're right Earl you can point a problem with any manufacturer. Buddy of mine on here purchased an Andersons .308 and as soon as he got home it wouldn't chamber now he has to wait another week for a replacement....

I just got a Colt 901. Haven't had time to run it much except to dial in a scope. Excited to shoot it this weekend. the added bonus is I can change it to a 5.56 in about a minute.

Here's a pic of my Armalite AR10A DEF10($940 at a gunshow). Not quite done with it yet. Has a Burris mount, Redfield Revolution TAC MOA scope, BCM Charging handle & Magpul SL mil spec stock. Earl

If you want to look at a Ruger SR762 and have a Cabela's card or Cabela's bucks..the Allen Cabela's has one (or did the other day) on their used gun racks priced at $1495 if I remember right. Earl

I have ran most of the 308's, and sold tons of them, and have never had a Sig come back for any reason. Can't say that about the others. With the gas adjustment feature, and with decent maintenance, can't imagine having many issues. I agree with Earl, bet we could find gripes about all of them.

Thanks for all the replies, after all the research, I ended up going with CMMG Mk3 cbr, it looks like CMMG has a lot of things going for them. And I stayed within my budget
