That sir, would be a very nicely feathered Goldeneye Hen.

I don't know if that is a GOlden Eye hen or not. Its body seems to the just larger than that of a teal. The eye is all dark, I am just not convinced that is a golden.

thanks for the ID! I was leaning towards a juvenile pintail but I certainly won't go against what a taxidermist says it is...

I looked again this morning and do believe it is a Golden. I still say its body is small for a golden though.

The way he is holding it makes it harder to tell. You can't see the yellow on the tip of the bill...but you can kind of see the yellow in the eye...but that may just be a reflection. I've never been hunting when someone shot a golden eye.

I noticed that also. If we had a full shot of the bill we would see its yellow tip. I'm going to try and get another picture of that bird from my buddy that shot it. Also, there was some hooded merganser drakes and one hen that was shot during this hunt and the bird in question was about the same size as the hoodie's.

Goldeneyes are not big birds. They are considered medium size with weights typically under three pounds. The bird in the pic is unquestionably, undeniably, without a doubt a common goldeneye hen.
