Honestly I'd rather have quantity. I like watching deer and don't mind going dry if I don't see one I want. I'd rather hunt a place where you'll see lots of deer but few over 120 with at least a chance at a 130 or so than one where you'll see very few deer but every buck you see is 150.

I go deer hunting to get away from my wife, drink beer, cook good food, and hang out with old freinds. I didn't pull the trigger on a deer this year. We had several teenage boys hunting with us this year and I let them shoot mine. I would have to pick quantity because I like to see everyone get a deer that wants one.

Why can't both be present? If you have one, a number quality bucks in mature deer then it should be present in the younger deer also. Mature deer just don't drop from the sky above, they were all young at one time. Hunting a place with one quality mature deer every so often is not what I call hunting quality deer. That kind of quality is what I would call more of the exception quality. Absolutely. It seems very shortsighted to focus on quality alone. Having more deer with a wider range of genetics only makes sense so that you have more to work with in terms of overall development. Despite what the QDM followers continue to preach, the habitat in our region will safely support much larger concentrations of deer than they would lead so many to believe. If that is true, then what is the purpose of supplemental feeding /food plots? Carry more deer inside HF where browse is limited. FIFY

If you think you can...but no it is not that hard to train deer to eat from a feeder if you are really wanting them to.

What height are the ports off of the ground? Mix the protein in with the corn on the ground and make them pick around it. What brand of protein?

Quantity. Suppose you had a lease where you only saw a deer once every five seasons, but it was a 145? Very boring. So boring, I'd stop hunting it.
OTOH if I see one deer per sit, that's enough to keep me happy in that regard.

Don't know exact height, but it's a little above waist high on me. 9 different brands, purinas, bryant, producer, pilgrims persimmon, cpl custom mixes done 50/50.

Don't know exact height, but it's a little above waist high on me. 9 different brands, purinas, bryant, producer, pilgrims persimmon, cpl custom mixes done 50/50. If you haven't checked then I would make sure the feed ports are no more than 32-35" off the ground (if you have hogs might have to start closer to 35" max). You are going to start younger deer and does faster on feed than older deer so make it easier for them to eat out of the feeder so feed them. The older deer will take more time. Make sure the feed port openings are large enough for a deer to eat easily out of...notice is said easily. A lot of companies make the port openings to small for deer to eat out of easily. If the feeders with 2 ports are feeders with 3 legs throw them in the dump. I will never mix feed in a feeder if the deer in the area have never eaten or even seen protein. I will put straight corn in the feeder and around it on the ground to let deer get accustomed to eating out of the feeder first. You have to train them to use the feeder and what it is for first since it is not spreading corn on the ground twice a day. Then put up a feed pen but leave to panels on opposite side from each other open for access(closing after I see tracks jumping in and out over the panels). Then after they are eating corn I will mix corn 75% with protein 25% and put in 50# in the feeder. Then gradually take them to 100% protein. If it your are green like I am right now then deer will take much longer to each protein. My feed is way off compared to last August. Location of a feeder is very important also. TC will show you were concentrations of young bucks/does will be. I will put feeders on the edge of food plots but prefer back in the brush/trees on heaviest trails. As far as feed brand, if you have not tried Record Rack then try it. It has a taste that deer will eat, although it is the most expensive feed out there. I started the deer on my place with Lyssy and Eckels in October 2.5 yrs ago. Put up a feed pen with a spin feeder and protein feeder. I am not sure if any of my neighbors have ever used a feed pen and do not think they have since it was difficult to get deer into pens. Put 50# of corn in each feeder and after it was gone then mixed 75% corn with 25% protein and put 75# in each feeder. Took 2-3 weeks on the first feeder and 5-6 weeks on other 2 feeders. It has been almost 2.5 yrs now and still do not have 100% of the deer eating out of the protein feeders or jumping in feed pens. What I do have is all the young deer raised on the feed eating out of the feeders when they need it.

If you are talking about seeing a great buck once every other weekend, then I would go for that, but if you are talking about seeing one buck a season, even though it was an outstanding one, I'm afraid I will have to go for the quantity over quality as long as they are of legal shooters.

I'm in it for quality deer but I'm not able to sit and not see deer most of the time or only see the same few deer most hunts hoping that one good buck will come around during the rut or in daylight hours. I want both and am willing to pay for that privilege.

When we hunted east Texas back in the late 90's- early 2000's we would be happy to see a buck or two a weekend. We had many hunts where we never saw a buck period One place we had I never saw but one buck the whole time we hunted there Happy to have moved to south Texas where I normally was 5-6 bucks per sit
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Hunted the hill country growing up with quantity and recently was able to hunt Jones county where the buck weight is almost double and I passed up 3-4 bucks that would have been my personal best. I was patient and took a nice 220 pound 6.5 year old 10 point.
I bet I didn't see a 6.5 year old deer in 20 years hunting between Brady and Llano.
Quality all day!

Sounds like I might be in the minority. I want the meat. If I know there are a few big ones out there I am ok with that.
I have been hunting all my life, I only have two racks that I consider really nice.

If I have to choose between the two then I'd rather have quantity. If I'm hardly seeing any deer, I'm going to get bored pretty quickly. Hunting all season and only seeing a few deer, even if they are trophy bucks, just doesn't seem very fun to me.
