My wife, the animal behaviorist, says "It's a bobcat with an exceptional clouded spotting pattern. Beautiful and quiet rare, but not unheard of." If you look at this photo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bobcat_stare.jpg you can see the same pattern only much fainter. Here's another odd pattern on a bobcat: http://animals.timduru.org/dirlist/bobCat/wildcat56-SnowLynx-bobcat.jpg She also says, "If it were an ocelot, the clouded spotting would extend into a more bar-like pattern toward the front of the body. As you see in the posted photos of the ocelots."

From my personal experience hunting and trapping bobcats, it is 110% Bobcat IMO. Young one with an exceptionally nice spotted coat. There can be amazing variety between them both between ranges and individual cats. I was hunting a then Type II unit in Robertson County several years ago and had a friend kill one very much like that one.

We used to breed Bengal cats.
I am still waiting on a pic of a bobcat that looks anything like that.

It ain't an ocelot, the tail is not long enough.
Have you ever seen a Black Bobhcat???
Plenty of other folks have, enough so that it is accepted that they exist.
Prove that it isn't a Bobcat and it is an Ocelot, Can You Do That From That One Picture????

100% bobcat
You don't know, so you can't say anything 100%. plus you already gave your opinion two post earlier that it was a bobcat.:: Quote:
That is a bobcat with a GREAT spotted coat.
Contrary to some advice given above I say DO NOT shoot that animal, on the small chance that it is an ocelot. The ocelot were on the endangered list at one time and I think the "texas ocelot" may still be protected,(but I'm not sure so I wouldn't say 100%)
Here are some links that might be of interest.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocelot http://www.edf.org/article.cfm?contentID=5110
Let me rephrase it...110% sure its a bobcat, we trapped one back in Dec. & she had the same spots just not as vibrant as that (& I have pics of the cat, still in the freezer). Plus I have seen, killed & trapped enough to know the difference. It isnt a ocelot.. NEVER that far north
Never that far north. I hunted west of Graham by Ivan and had an ocelot walk by me while I was hunting. The only reason I know it wasn't a bobcat is because it walked 5 yards from me. It stopped about 30 yards away from me for about 25 mins. I had my scope on it the entire time. I was thinking about killing it but they are protected animals and I didn't want a ticket.

Haven't we already done this? Neither of us can prove either way. And don't you think just for one second that the tail could be pointed right at the camera giving it an illusion that it is shorter than it is? Or can you not even acknowledge that?
Why are you getting so worked up over my opinion?
Did I ever say a black bobcat doesn't exist?

bobcat....look at tpwd or usfws species description. Today, an ocelot occurs in deep south texas in very thick brush. I have included a short description from mammals of texas online
Once ranged over southern part of Texas with occasional records from north and central Texas; now restricted to several isolated patches of suitable habitat in three or four counties of Rio Grande Plains.
Habits. The ocelot is a neotropical felid that once inhabited the dense, almost impenetrable chaparral thickets of South Texas, the Gulf coast, and the Big Thicket of eastern Texas. Today, it is found only in several small, isolated patches of suitable habitat remaining in South Texas and is on the verge of completely disappearing from the state. It is listed as "endangered" by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Who says I am worked up???
Now, have You seen a Black Bobcat?????
Why are You getting so worked up because I don't agree with your assessment on the situation????????
I can say what it definitely isn't, but as to what it definitely is, probability dictates that it is a Bobcat, not a domestic breed of house cat, and dang sure not an Ocelot or Margay.
I am not worked up, I just believe that the picture is of a Bobcat, but I can not prove it, just like no one else can dis-prove it.

Some people. Did you know that most states in the US say they don't have a cougar population? At least a few of those do. Same thing with wolves. Now, do you think that just because the TPW site says "they are in southern Texas" that one could NEVER possibly roam up north? Guess what. I saw TWO ocelots by Possum Kingdom lake a couple years ago. They chased each other across the road. How do I know they were ocelots? Well, since I had never seen a cat like them I did some looking and found out what they were. But they never go that far north right? I was just seeing things? And since everyone is talking about pics, I looked and looked and looked for bobcat pics with anything close to that pattern, to no avail. Type in Ocelot and--Holy Crap!--lots and lots of pics of cats that look just like the one in the pic. Since Maggie wants to show pics of bobcats that she thinks looks like the first pic, I will post one of an ocelot that looks a hell of a lot more like it than ANY bobcat pic I have found. Look! The tail isn't very long! Holy Wild cat Batman!

Sounds like you don't like my opinion.
No never seen a black bobcat. But I have no reason to say the don't exist, or that they do exist. I have no opinion either way.
Not getting worked up. I never said it was a ocelot, I said it isn't a bobcat, and I think it is an ocelot. Not 100% sure of anything.
You are saying it isn't an ocelot because the tail is to short and the region it was taken right? Do you agree that it is possible the tail could be pointing at the camera? Is it at least possible? Can an ocelot move out of its region?
Still waiting on one pic of a bobcat with spots like that. What no one can post one?
I agree we can't prove it either way.
Do you beleive that people have illegal ocelots as pest?

So there is no way an ocelot can exist outside of the area wildlife service says?
