I have gotten into hog hunting with my bow and currently carry my FNX 45 as a side arm. Normally, I'd think 45 would be enough but I have seen some pretty big boys and Im a little worried 45 might not stop a charger. Thoughts?

Over the years I worked in law enforcement, we would evaluate many calibers. What we discovered is that a 230 grn .45 was a great summer gun, but was less effective during winter. The .45 is typically slower and obviously has a larger diameter. In winter time heavy clothing actually reduced penetration and accounted for less fatal injuries in winter, similar effect caused the the hog's thick hide and fatty tissue and gristle layers. Officer switched to 9mm 119 to 147 grn bullet in winter to get a faster bullet of a smaller diameter that would penetrate deeper and produced a more lethal injury in winter.

Between the two calibers you listed, a 10mm would perform much better.

Never had problems with my .45acp loaded with JHP. Im sure 45 is alot cheaper to shoot than 10mm. If a hog can charge thru 2 or more rounds of either just hand it the gun tip your hat and apologize. Lol

There is a significant difference between shooting humans and shooting animals with pistol rounds.

Humans are capable or reason and fear when shot. Enraged animals don't reason and feel fear when attacking.

It is quite possible to shoot an animal with a .45 and have the animal continue to charge and attack. When dealing with animals that are aggressive, you need a round that will stop the animal quickly and put it down to prevent it from continuing to attack.

If you have a charging animal, you want the best round for the job so that you can kill the animal as quickly as possible. The 10 is a better choice over a 45. Price really isn't an issue as you might never fire more than 5-10 rounds in a lifetime. It is an insurance policy that you are carrying, so carry the one best suited to the task.

I have shot animals at close range with pistols and a .45 doesn't do as well as the 10.

I went thru this same debate myself and here is what I concluded after reading many opinions.

If you reload then yes it is worth it to buy a 10mm.

If you do not reload then you are wasting your time with a 10mm.

A buffalo bore Hard cast 255 gr .45ACP + P is going to do the trick.

I personally do not reload and didnt want a new gun so I stuck with the .45 + P

Now if someone wanted to give me a Les Baer or Wilson Combat 10 MM then I would be all over it and my 45 would be in the safe.

the ballistics performance of the +P makes your 45 a good enough back up for your needs if it is your secondary weapon

Like Bigfoot said, if you reload then 10mm is the way to go. Over the counter rounds for the 10mm is pretty much like shooting 40 cal.

I have shot pigs with both a 45 and a 10mm. There is no question there is a huge upgrade going to the 10mm. If I were to use a 45, it would be a 230 FMJ for the deep penetration, but not if I have a 10mm. A 200 grain XTP will flat out hammer a pig with a good shot, I've done it. I carry a G29 as my carry gun, have a second G29, and use a G20 as my field and truck gun. They are a blast to shoot and hit very hard.

Most of the factory 10mm ammo is watered down to 40 S&W speeds, and I've tested and chronographed them. I began offering 10mm ammo because of the lack of good, full power options from the factory stuff. I have researched and tested with the different 40 cal bullets. Here is what I have written on my 10mm site, and what issues you have with hot 10mm +P stuff:

"This ammunition is designed for best accuracy and functioning in 10mm pistols. There are companies that will load hot 10mm +P ammo, but it will cause cycling problems and accuracy issues for stock Glock pistols. I have pushed the speeds up beyond the normal operating 10mm pressures, and accuracy was very poor and failure to chamber problems began. When you load to standard max 10mm pressures (non +P pressures), the 10mm shoots very well and is very reliable. That is where I load this ammunition. It is a standard max full power 10mm Auto load, and works great in all 10mm pistols. It is NOT 10mm Auto loaded to 40 S&W speeds."

Me, I carry a .22LR pistol. I've never seen hogs charge anyone, they generally break for cover at high speed as soon as the shooting starts. Of course, I'm not bow hunting — I'm carrying a .30 cal rifle. There are some bow hunters with whom I share hunting space at times, and they typically carry something larger but not because of hogs. We've occasionally seen a mountain lion (like, once every 2-4 years) and that's what's they're worried about. I just carry the .22 for a finishing shot on a hog if it should be necessary. For anything else I'm going to use the rifle that I already have in my hands.

Be careful! A .22 will bounce off a bone and ricochet!

I really didnt want to buy another gun so I stayed with 45 and went with the +P hard cast bullets for hunting

Honestly I think you'll be fine unless hogzilla is on the loose. I just wanted an excuse for the 10mm
