So I see guys post that they shoot game at 300, 500, 800+ yards. I have a hard time believing that game drops in its tracks. (A lightning kill) Which seems to indicate the game runs, engorges the muscle with blood and adrenaline, and thus is more gamey than I shoot at 125 yards; that is stone dead before his head hits the ground. It seems a quick kill equals less stressed meat? Or is it just about the "kill" at 400+?

I eat venison from about 10-15 different deer a year, and personally I don't find there to be much difference whether they be buck, doe, young, old, shot at 10 yards or shot at 1000.

Whether they drop or run has to do with shot placement, bullet construction, and impact velocity. Hit them in the spine, and they drop, regardless of distance. Fragmenting bullets, like Bergers, also have a tendency to drop them even when shot in the vitals. These bullets also tend to perform better at distance. If you're going to demonize long distance hunting, there are much better arguments to go with.

If deer don't taste different-your taste buds must be off. There's a reason a bull goes to hamburger and not to the fine steak table. As to the clean, quick, kill-I'm just thinking a deer that runs and fills those quads and muscles with blood(like pumping up at the gym) he or she might be more gamey. Slaughter houses kill the animal quickly and get the blood out fast.

Or is it just about the "kill" at 400+? Dang right! On prairie dogs, hogs, and coyotes.

I bleed all my game meat out in a ice chest before processing. Never noticed any difference if they drop or run.

The key to DRT shots is to focus shot placement on the central nervous system.
The question is how far can one reliably make a CNS shot?
For some folks that might be 50 yards, or not at all, and for others it might be 500 yards.
Depends on the person as well as conditions.

I give my meat away but I haven't noticed a difference in taste due to how far I shot it at

This means less expansion and a smaller but longer wound channel.

This thread started out ridiculous and is getting ridiculouser.

Nogalus,
I agree! If you are so concerned how another person hunts that tells me maybe you should be hunting harder yourself. I may not agree all the time how another person hunts but I don't say much unless it is just plain dangerous. In this day and age I am just happy people are hunting and not being an anti-hunter...

I shot a antelope at 400+ yards walked 3 steps and dropped. Watch another one shot at 598 yards never took a step. Watched another one shot at 560 dropped in its tracks. These were all in the same day. All different shooters with different calibers. 7mm,.300 ultra, 308 all in that order. All about skill set and equipment.
Live to hunt, forced to work!

10 out of 10 deer will act differently with the exact same behind the shoulder, heart/lung-be-gone, shot.

There is another thread where a forum member basically said everyone that was bleeding their meat was wasting their time.
