 Where are the Turkeys?

I've been on three or four different leases that had turkeys. It seems that on every one of them I saw turkeys before rifle deer season and into the first week or so, then they disappear until Spring turkey season. Where did they go? Have they patterned me and the other hunters? In warmer weather, they eat lots of insects, which can bring them out into more open areas. Do diet changes cause them to stay in heavier cover in the winter? How does their behavior change with colder weather? Any ideas?

 They were on my food plots eating my seed! Actually, they are eating the heck out of acorns right now on my place. I saw 2 toms come in at noon, then 14 hens/poults and finally group of 6 jakes around 4pm the other day. This was on a feeder that is inside the post oak woods (acorns galore!).

Turkeys are on camera at our lease in the middle of the afternoon, almost every day. It is odd how they move around. They do come by the family family ranch during Spring season.  They like to roost there and raise the little ones, then disappear till winter. Maybe lack of varmints at our place is attractive, who knows?

I've found if you run a mix of protein with your corn in the feeder, they are more likely to come by. They seem to love that protein. Of course like everything with turkeys, it isn't a for sure thing. We only run a protein mix in three of our feeder in the area they frequent most often. We have plenty of pictures of them at our other feeders that are straight corn too. They move around a lot!

What parts of the state are you more likely to find turkeys? I've never hunted them before, so I'm just curious. I pretty much have zero knowledge about turkeys other than they taste good.

West of I-35, north to south is best bet. There are pockets of Easterns east of I-35.
I recommend getting a guide for your first hunt and let him give you a taste of calling in a big tom for you. You'll be hooked for life. Spring season will be here soon.

We have quite a few on our place. We had a guy hunt hard for them and everyone else that was hunting bucks saw them at their feeders except for him lol.

They move around a lot in winter. Probably eating pecans down in creek bottom areas.
Life is too short, as is. Don't chance it.

Sitting in my stand in southern Mills County yesterday morning, and around 9:00 a.m. I had 8 beautiful toms stroll through and stop a while to munch on my corn. As they headed for the tank, they crossed single-file about 30 yards in front of my stand.
In retrospect, I wish I'da shot one...but I was "waiting on a deer" that never showed.

I had 80+ show up last weekend. They flew down from the roost and then split up in four groups, came back that evening and roosted together again. I've bee on this lease for 12 years and have not seen this many in the winter.

Tophers relax it is winter and they are in their traditional winter flocks, they can sometimes reach over 200 birds! This will not be the case by mid March. The flock will break up and disappear.

All over the cameras then they disappear by rifle deer season
