Hello,
I am new here, I will be moving to Texas from Nevada and I am interested in hunting Hogs and other varmint. up here in NV we hunt manly jack rabbit and coyote at night and it can be done on any public land.
I will be moving to the Houston area and was looking into hunting some wildlife areas around there. Maybe Angelina forest?
After I get a permit, Can I just hike around and hunt? I prefer to hike and sometimes camp in remote areas and prefer to be free. Not really into hunting stocked ranches. Its more about the outdoors to me rather than a slaughter. In Nevada its pretty deserted and you really feel free and away from it all when out in the wilderness. Are these national forests more crowded? Ive been looking on google earth and they look pretty big, but I don't want to do anything illegal.
These National forests like Angelina say that hunting is welcome, but are they crowded or is it easy to just hike in away from people and shoot?
I will be using short barreled rifles and machine guns where legal. I pretty much only have class 3 stuff all in 5.56 and one semi auto 16" .308 rifle (all will be legal in Texas). 5.56 should be fine for hogs right? Maybe a suppressed 3 round burst for hogs? Can you shoot in these areas for fun also or is it only hunting?
If anyone would like to invite me with them some time that would be awesome also?
If anyone can give me some advice that would be great.
I am really excited about texas, hopefully it will all work out well.

most if not all units do not allow target shooting. night hunting for hogs is also not allowed except on some corps land. I don't know about the class 3 stuff check the TPWD website or call the GW. welcome and good luck.

Welcome to Texas.
I'm not much help in what you are asking, but, you won't be classified as a resident till after being in the state for 6 months. But I think you can get a non-res. license for small game pretty reasonable. A good place to start is the TPWD web site.

dont think  allows the hunting with machine guns yet.  they are fun ta choot. former M-60 gunner  i gots cheap posts

Me and my buddies go to Wyoming for 2 weeks every summer for flyfishing in the day and coyote hunting in the evening on BLM land west of Casper. If Nevada is anything like Wyoming, you may be in for a shock at all the rules and regulations. I know on the BLM where we hunt there are basically 3 rules: pack your trash out when you leave, respect other hunters, and leave the cows alone.

Hey Thank you guys!! Yeah NV is really relaxed, basically you can do whatever you want and you can spend 5 days somewhere and not see a single other person. I guess when I get there I will figure out all the regulations. I am VERY excited to be in Texas! If anyone decides to go out hiking/hunting around one of these Houston areas let me know  . Active, you're in for a rude awaking as far as freedom to just walk around the land. Where as Nevada has a tremendous amount of public land, Texas has very little in comparison. I have family that lives in Nevada and we just drive out into the desert and blast away. Can't really do that here.

Welcome to Texas! Texas is a wonderful place but as others have said, relatively speaking there is very little public land. With time you'll figure out places you can go to get away from people but it will just take time out in the woods to figure it out. have fun and good luck!

I live in the Houston area, and there are a few good public lands to hunt... At night for hogs... that is another story.
Only one public place I know of around here (within 3 hours) allows hog hunting at night. Good thing about Houston, is that the public areas around here that allows rifles are more than other areas I have encountered. Most are shotgun and archery only.

Welcome to Texas! You'll never want to leave when you cross the state line, bud.
Go to the deep east/central Texas area and find you some hogs. They're heavy around there usually. I'm from Houston myself.

Sam Ok well first off I hope that you have transferred your federal class 3 license to Texas I would hate to get caught driving around with fully automatic machine guns anywhere here in Texas without the proper paper work. As for hunting with fully automatic machine guns ANYWHERE in Texas? Well sorry but that is ILLEGAL. Hunting on most if not all public land here in Texas with a center fire rifle is also illegal, the majority of these lands are shotgun, black powder or bow only. You can not hunt varments or hogs at night on public land and damn sure can't do it with a fully automatic machine gun......

I was not assuming you were doing anything illegal, I happen to be very good friends with an ATF agent and know how the laws work. Just call your local game warden or a state trooper! It is NOT LEGAL TO HUNT GAME of any kind ON PUBLIC LAND IN TEXAS WITH A FULLY AUTOMATIC WEAPON! From what I have read it appears to be legal on private land for feral hogs only....

Do more reading and you will find out that MG's or any kind of fully automatic weapon is NOT a legal firearm for hunting game animals or NON game animals on either national forests lands or public hunting lands ANYWHERE in the state of Texas. BTW feral hogs are considered exotic animals NOT a non game animal. Still,checking on the use of fully automatic weapons on private property.....

Hey sounds good. it seems like shotgun will be the way to go. I like my bolt .308 the best but people keep saying you should use a semi or AR style platform. I was just curious about it.
