Question.. Has anyone ever tried to de hair a hog using steam? Just curious.
I would think it would work nice on smaller hogs under 80 lbs.

Haven't tried steam but have done a bunch of farm raised ones using hot water, you want to scald the hide but not boiling hot, might be tricky with steam of heating enough but not over heating.
Worth a try then if it does not work skin the pig
lf the saying "Liar, Liar your pants on fire" were true Mainstream news might be fun to watch

Have you tried using a weed burner hooked to a grill propane cylinder?

I used a pear burner to burn the hair off a big feral ham. It worked perfectly, turning the skin into cracklings. I left the skin on and smoked it, tasty.

Scalded feral hogs are plenty of work. Never steamed the hair off. Torching feral hogs is cool but you still have to scrape the mud off. Hard bristled brush, lime and and hot water works good for that.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

I carry water, a bucket, Dawn, and a stiff scrub brush on the Gator. I plan to winch em up with a hitch mount game hoist, clean em up, then gut them. I don't want anything on the outside to get on the inside.

So no one has tried Steam... I may try this once I get back on my feet in a few months. I may also bring my power washer to clean them before I start.

When I think of a steamer, a ladies dress store type comes to mind. I have done the following: Powerwashing----- works pretty good on thin haired animals but its pretty nasty on the wooly ones. Hot Water and scraping ------- a pain on any of them. Shearing----- This is something I want to try just haven't had the right circumstances.
PRIVATELY OWNED TAHC permitted feral swine holding facility. Serving Gulf Coast and South Texas ranchers, farmers, hunters, and residents with abatement. Disposal, Traps and in-field pick-up service available.

Apologize if this is a silly question, but why would you want/need to clean or de-hair the hide?

Apologize if this is a silly question, but why would you want/need to clean or de-hair the hide? That's the traditional way to process domesticated hogs, since leaving the skin on hams and such just makes for a better looking finished product. It's a fair bit more work then skinning them, in my limited experience, and getting the temperature right when scalding is critical.

Leaving the skin on also helps hold a lot of that fat/juice/marinade in the meat, turning out more tender & juicy BBQ. When done, pull that skin back and get to pickin'.
