Well done. And with a .30-30 too (I think??). No tracking snow either.

Congratulation on the cat. Got to be a story to go along with picture.

I appologize for not providing any additional information on the mountain lion hunt. The hunt was with Ethan Savitsky, Pecos Bar X Bar Outfitter in Pecos, New Mexico. The pictures do not show snow, but there was plenty of snow on the mountain. The snow started to melt the second day of the hunt. The hunt started outet 4 am with fresh snow riding the trails looking for fresh tracks. We saw many tracks, just not lion, tons of elk and mule deer. We finally came across 5 lion tracks, which appeared to be a female and her cubs, so we continued on. The second day started again at 4 am, and we finally found a fresh track on a trail in the national forrest. Ethan's experience confirmed this was a fairly new track. Ethan released his tracking hounds, using a GPS within minutes the dogs were about 3/4 mile away . So off we went monitoring the dogs, drove around the mountain to get ahead of the dogs. We heard the dogs barking and off we went, or I should say this old man started breathing hard and did not even start running yet. Nerves were intense. We ran around a 1/2 mile into the forrest and found the dogs had treed a large male cat in a pinion tree. The look of the cat on the top of a tree was well worth the trip. You can not describe the fear you have with this animal looking straight at you with those evil eyes. We secured the dogs and worked for a clean shot. I got the go ahead from Ethan and the shot was made using an old Winchester 94 in 7x30 Waters. The cat fell and the dogs secured the cat before I got there. On the way down to the cat, all of those spent nerves and shakes appeared at the same time. I am 54 years old and I felt like a first time hunter...cat fever.
This kind of hunt has been on my bucket list for some time. The hunt was better than I expected. There were slow times, then you would locate fresh tracks and you forget about all of the hours and miles in the past looking. I dropped the cat off at Imperial Taxidermy in Sante Fe for a full body mount.
If you would like more info on the hunt, PM me and I will be glad to provide more info.
I think I will go back to Pecos in the fall for a bear hunt.

Beautiful tom, congratulations! There is nothing like a lion hunt in beautiful country with great hounds and a guide that knows the country. Snow really helps to find a fresh track, one that you can run. Hunting dry ground can be extremely difficult with a lot more of the "down" time that you were talking about. I am sure he will make a beautiful mount. Adios, Gary
