For you guys that think your ol Blockhead is a pretty good Gundog, well have I got something for you! The Prarie's End Hunt Club is hosting a Gundog competition. This will be one of the first events of this kind in North Texas. Here is the way the game is played .... you will get a field of about 75 X 300 Yards 3 birds will be pre planted. you and your dog will have 20 minutes and 6 shotgun shells, to bag all 3 birds This event is open to Pointing and flushing dogs. There will be amateur and open and Novice classes. I can tell you these events are an absolute BLAST If you have questions feel free to contact me here on the forum Clint

Just to clarify a bit.. There is a pointing division and a flushing division. You can run as a amateur or a open entry You can run as an amateur if your dog is less than 3 yrs, and you have not run as an open entry this year. so if your dog is 3+ you must run in open class. If you have run NUCS as an open entry this year you must run open. We are planning to run the event on Chukar, however, this may change due to availability of birds. If you are not sure of what you want to do you can run as a novice. You can only run 1X and the run is not officially scored.

These type of events are a GREAT TIME!! We ran them on the east coast when we lived there. We always did well with a black little whippet of a labrador out of Cosmo. The later in the draw you ran, the better chance you had of having more birds in the field.

What makes this event so much fun is that it is a team effort between you and your dog. The dog does not have to do anything in particular except find and retrieve birds. Then you have to do your part by hitting the birds. These events aren't as stuffy as the AKC events. This is just like hunting except you are under the clock.

So there's no winner in novice? Just trying to decide if I want to do amateur or novice.

Correct no novice winner. It is designed to give someone who is a bit unsure about their dog or themselves a chance to have fun without pressure. Everything about it is the same as the amateur or open just no official score. you can run either and still have fun.

I'm going to come win the amateur pointing division. Jk I've never done anything like it but we'll try if we can make it.

The "scrambles" we had run had huge cash pots for 1-3rd place. They were very competitive.

Don't you have to enter before the trial and draw for braces?

Bill this event is only going to be singles Only one dog at a time on any field. We will, however, have multiple fields to keep things moving along.

it's a points system Everything that happens on the field either gives or takes points. Time is the big determining factor, BUT you must bag the 3 birds. The time left over from your 20 minutes gives you extra points Birds bagged gives you points retrieves to hand gives you points shotgun shells used costs points but leftover shells gives points. So you MUST be quick your dog needs to retrieve to hand and you must be accurate.

Sorry to hear you won't make it. If we can get enough people out i'm sure there will be more events. I have a feeling this will be very popular.

It's close enough to home for me, so just for the fun of it I might come out and donate an entry fee if not on shift that day or not off hunting wild birds somewhere.
These are the same events I have seen listed running in west Texas? right? My dog turns three in February, so what I am reading in the rules I could still run him in amateur if I wanted because he had not turned three until after the start of the NUCS calendar year even though he is a three year old at the time of the event?

In answer to your questions John, Yes there are a couple of clubs out close to Midland /Odessa area I think they only run pointing stakes as there just aren't many flushing dogs out that way. I believe you are correct on the age rule. I can find out and let you know. Would love to see you come out. You will have a great time.

I am in the process of making up an entry form, and will have it out soon. Seems our pointing classes are going to fill up quick. We are going to limit each class to 30 dogs. This is close the maximum number of runs we can do in one day. 30 Open pointing 30 Am Pointing 30 Open Flushing 30 Am Flushing So a total of 120 runs... Some of which will be 2X runs

All I really need is an E-mail with your name phone number dog name class and division number of runs. I have a spread sheet set up so we can keep track of everyone. We need to start this so we know how many birds to get what to get set up for.... Gotta have a plan!
