Im wanting to get a 308 bolt action for deer hunting. So far this year Ive used my AR15 223 and it has worked fine. Im just wanting a bigger caliber and a bolt action would be cheaper to get into then a 308 AR10. What do yall think are the best options in the $800 range, that is including glass. Im thinking Tikka, Remington, or the ever so evil Savage. Im definitely wanting a true SA not an Axis or Stevens 200 with the long SA. What do ya think? The reason Im saying 308 is the ammo availability of that caliber. Would probably get ammo from Chad on here. Shots from 50 to 300 max. What ya got??

I do like the Tikkas over all of them. I just want something accurate and dependable. I know the Tikkas come with a good guarantee.

If you like the tikka, buy the tikka. For the most part its all preference. Give it time and you'll have a good argument going on which is best. Then someone will suggest a 270 or 7mm-08 and its on.

The Tikka is also a long action with a short action caliber. But a Tikka T3 is hard to beat.
A good Rem 700 is fine. I prefer to spend money on good glass and custom ammo. Getting a 308 Win to shoot is not hard. 2 weeks ago I won my first Rifles Only match shooting a 308 with 175 Bergers. It will do it!

Personally I don't think you would notice much difference if you took a Tikka, Remington, wby vanguard, savage, ruger 77, win model 70, or browning abolt etc. out and shot them for groups. I have shot several and never been disappointed in any of them.

I bought the Mossberg MVP 308, 10 shot clip, heavy barrel 18 1/2", synthetic stock, so far it shoots great (40 rounds) it looks alot like the Ruger Gunsite just less monies $503.00(Bud's Gun Shop com.) Probably start some bad vibes over Mossberg.

As stated above all tikkas are long action. But with that said none of the others come close to it. For your hunting purposes the savage will do what you want all day. I have went the tikka/sako only route. But not because they are better to hunting inside 300. Mostly it's because of the bolt and trigger. Savage and Remington can't touch it. On paper I say, tikka, savage, then remington. But all should give you nice sub MOA groups.

^^ No problem! I'm all for a good Sako TRG in 308. But we might go over the $800 budget by just a little.

why 308...if you are going to buy ammo you could go other calibers...
personally i would go with 270 or 260/6.5 family
to answer your original question Remington 700 and look for a vortex viper or used pst

Yes all Tikkas are long actions, but if you buy a short action chambering, you get a short action bolt stop.
The reason I went over to Tikka is because of the 60 degree bolt throw, smooth cycling, awesome factory trigger, better extractor design than anyone else, beefy ejector. I built two customs off of Tikka actions, bit I've seen many a factory barrel shoot very well.
And Chad is spot on saying it will be easy to get it to shoot. I learned to shoot distance with a 308 and learned to hand load on a 308. They are not hard to make shoot.

I really like the Tikka T3 lites I've had. I'm on my 3rd,a .243, and they've all shot pretty well. I do think the T3 lite would kick a little harder than your average .308 though, but I haven't shot one. I'd like to get my hands on the CTR in either .308 or .260, there's a thread going on them over at snipershide.
I like Savages also, and think they're generally a good value. You could do something like a 10PC for $700ish, or jump up to FCP Mcmillan for a little over $1K. They don't really need uprgrading, but you can if you'd like....

I've had bad luck with .308 so far, but it's been the rifles, not the cartridge.
To avoid any more bad luck, the next .308 I buy will be either a Weatherby Vanguard, a Browning X-Bolt or a Winchester model 70.
I'm kind of leaning toward a Model 70 Sporter.

So for the $800 budget would I be better off buying say a ADL and spending the rest on glass. I'll get with you Chad on the ammo.

Other question I have is I'm a lefty should I buy a left handed rifle? I'm used to the right handed rifles and have never used a lefty rifle should I start now?

I'm kind of leaning toward a Model 70 Sporter. You and me both. I don't currently own a .308 Win. as I gave my last one (Rem. 700 heavy re-barrel) to my oldest son to play with. I don't believe I'll be getting it back. No worries. I have a Tikka T3 7mm-08 for my wife that I play with from time to time, as the Remington was getting too dang heavy to lug around anyway. If I do get another .308, it'll most likely be a Browning X-Bolt.

You are getting a bolt action with your money. If you shoot lefty, then you might as well buy a lefty.
It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

I'm a lefty, used to shoot right handed bolt actions, then saw the light and went with LH bolt actions. I call BS on anyone that says you have an advantange shooting a right hand rifle left handed. Stand up and shoot offhand, then try to cycle the bolt left handed with a RH bolt. Doesn't work. Same as any other position.
