Several times I've mentioned a nice 9 point on our place, and how he's my breeding bull. I thought he was the biggest buck we had. Last evening I hunted a refurbed blind that I hadn't hunted in 2 years. Around 5:30 here came a bunch of does, followed by my herd bull buck. He ran out in the middle of the hay field and was chasing the girls. And then...out of the woods strode a serious buck. Light was fading, so I couldn't count the points, but the rack was far taller and wider than the 9 point and the body was heavier. The 9 point approached the big guy, who lowered his antlers and moved forward. The 9 point broke off and ran. That's the good news. The bad news is that the wife said "we have a ton of company coming. Don't you dare shoot that big buck".
Now I have to wait till everybody gets here, drinks all my beer, and heads home on Sunday. To heck with this herd bull stuff, I intend to shoot that big one (after I see him again and have a better look at the rack).

I guess times like this is why I ain't married yet...I would have shot that buck without hesitation. Gutted him in a couple of minutes and had him hanging in the barn with this cold weather. Then party on.

The company is fine with hunting. No problem there. The problem is that the wife likes to grind up most of the meat and mix it with beef brisket and put it away in the freezer. She doesn't want to mess with it just before the mob gets here. And, truth be told, she hates for me to shoot the big racked studs. She wants me to shoot the culls, which mostly I do.
I WOULD have shot that big rascal when I saw him, but the light was fading, I wanted a better look at the rack, and he never got within about 300 yards. I was wanting him to get a little closer so I could look him over, but he never did. I have another box blind closer to where he was, and I'll hunt that blind next time. And...one of the mob that's coming for the weekend is the grandson. I'll put him in that blind and hope he sees the big one. I'd be happy if he got him, and probably happier than if I got him.
Now, if the grandson does not shoot him, Monday could be my day...

Still could hang a day or 2, but letting your grandson have a crack at him, is a darn good reason. I hope the young man can connect so we can see that big ole buck

Hey 603, ask her if she knows who wears the pants around here. Tell her that you're old enough to make your own decisions about deer hunting. Uh, let me know how that works out for you. I've been considering it but need a test case.

Last evening I put the grandson out where I expected the big buck to show up - right where I had seen him the only two times. Back in my stand, minding my own business watching a couple of does and reading a good book. Looked left, looked front, and looked right and for some reason I picked up the binocs to look closer. Down in a ravine walked the big guy. All I could see was the tall rack. Holy cow. Then he took a left, stepped into the open for a few secs and I nailed him. First time I can remember getting the minor shakes over a buck in years. And dang it, I put the bullet a little back of where I wanted it. Waited 25 minutes to give him plenty of time to lay down. First time in a while that I wondered if that little 100 grainer Ballistic Tip was enough medicine. It was. Whew. And the wife was already gearing up to fry some venison, so I rushed her some backstrap and the big buck was not gamey at all. Still had a good layer of white fat, not the yellow fat.
Nine point. Really nice rack for this part of the country. Weighed 135 pounds, which puts him 115 pounds short of the last big buck I shot over in eastern Louisiana, but still nice for central Texas.

I took some pics on my take-a-long little camera. Let me download them and see if they came out Ok. When I get home tomorrow I'll do that and then see if I can figure out how to post a pic.

I think that, after being married this long, we swap out the pants.
Ya know, as for the buck, he was a whopper for this part of the world, but would have been a good looking midget where I grew up. He does, however, taste good. Seems odd to me, but central Texas deer taste better than the Louisiana deer I grew up on.
