Ours don't get that big, I've seen a few fall that big but vary rarely.

Those almost look like burr oak acorns.

Do they like burr oak acorns? I have 35 gallons of acorns the size of golfballs. They aren't green either.

They absolutely do. Gather as many as you can, and feed them to the deer. Better yet, plant a couple of Burr oaks in your hunting area if you own the place. Deep soil, close to a creek if possible.

what kind of hybrids do y'all have up there in VA?

I sure would like a mess of those to plant down in NWTX

I just read an interesting article on acorns and whitetails. In a nut shell (no pun intended) deer prefer acorns that have lost their hull over acorns with the hull still on them. Seems the acorns with hulls still on are bitter and the acorns that have lost their hulls are sweet. Pick your acorn trees to hunt according. Just thought I'd share.

I used to hear that deer prefer acorns from White Oak trees versus red or any other Oak tree!
Of course I am kind of west (Jacksboro)and white oaks I believe grow in E.TX

I've read the same. Easiest way is to pick a tree that has a lot of deer poop around it and hunt it. Takes a lot of guess work out.

I have always found that deer tend to prefer Chinkapin and Red Oak acorns followed by Pin Oak, White Oak, Bur Oak, Blackjack Oak, and least of all Post Oak.

I have eaten them myself and the Chinkapin and Red Oak are not near as bitter as, say, a Post Oak.

Our acorn crops run in cycles..... some years are a boom (like this year) and some a bust (last year there was hardly any). I was telling BOBO that here in VA the deer will go to corn over anything (as opposed to the :deer will go to white oak acorns over everything).

The picture was from a wildlife biologist I know well.....he said they were white oaks (but I think there are a host of white oak species). The acorns on my property are good size (whites & reds mostly) but not as big as the ones in the picture. I just had to jerk BOBO's chain a bit....can anyone blame me. :-)
