Where and Why?
Mayfield Ranch, Juno Texas in between Del Rio and Sonora on the Dry Devils River. My family was on it for almost thirty years. Mayfield Country Store right on the edge of the property we used to drive over to the store at night in our jeeps to pass the pleasure with Mr Mayfield in his package store where the state law against consuming alcoholic beverages on the premises was regularly ignored. Sometimes with the Game Warden sitting there with us.
Fantastic Rock Cabin with Bunk Room. Could also hunt White Wings, Blue Quail, and Turkeys. Many the late afternoon if we were not hunting and sitting in Mr Mayfields back yard dozens of wild turkeys would come in and roost in the Pecan Trees.
Man I miss that place. Not a better place to sit aroound a fire ring and drink Brown Water in Texas.

My current mule deer lease in Pecos County. No feeders, stand and not a high population of mule deer on a very large ranch, but is it fun to try to find those bucks.

The best lease I was ever on were the ones I was on with my Dad when I was growing up!!! He died about 8 years ago and was sick for a few years before that!!! Even today when I line up to shoot an animal I still remember the way he used to whisper advice to me!!! I wish he was still here and able to hunt with me!!!

it's almost like big deer make things a pain in the [censored].

The one I'm on now. Just three of us, and I picked the other two. All are responsible and respectful. No drama. We've got a basic but comfortable cabin. The deer aren't real big, but we have good numbers, killer scenery, and a WMA effort in progress. Also have good turkeys, some quail, and the occasional but not excessive pig.
Just a dang nice place to spend time. My only complaint is I can't get up there enough.

Current lease. 140's are common. Can sit and watch several deer a day. No feeders no blind, just a section of crp with wooded edgerows. Section ain't a lot but it's just me and my son on it. Plus its free, all I have to do is be friends with the elderly owner, which is one of the biggest pleasures. Great man with great stories of the old days. Truly an honor to know him.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Had a lease outside of Perrin, TX and although the deer weren't very big the numbers increased. My father leased from the family for about 30 years until the widow finally passed. The elevation changes, nice tanks, government lakes, and just the place I grew up on. When we lost that place I think we moved junk off for two months.
I often think about those memories as I got to hunt with my grandfather, my dad, brother, uncles, and other men whose kids are like family. I would give anything to give my son the same experience on that place or one similar.

The one I'm on now. 8 years. 10,000 acres. Mule deer and whitetail. Perfect for spot and stalk. Really cool history on the Pithfork ranch. Gods country.

They were all good. Someone else paid for them or I traded work for 'em. Now I got my own place.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

best lease we were ever on..counting back to when my dad started on it up thru when we finally got off...we were on for probably 20yrs plus. about 700ac in Kendal county. there wasnt' any deer management in place, folks shot what they wanted, we hunted alongside some of the family who owned the place. but you saw lots of deer, no problem filling a tag, buck or doe. and if you were patient...you could usually harvest a relatively nice hill country buck.
the folks we leased from were hands down the best people I've ever dealt with. wonderful people.
it broke my heart a little to get off that place....we left because we bought our own ranch. just didn't make sense to keep both. if we hadn't done that, I'd still be there.

I've hunted on several leases in the 50+ years I've hunted and I can't really say one lease was the best because I've enjoyed hunting them all, and I would go back and hunt them today if I could. Some were not what you would call trophy leases and not very many deer, and some were truely trophy leases where you had an honest chance of taking a book animal. My biggest buck on one of the ranches scored 158 Pope & Young taken with a bow, and bigger ones were taken off that ranch. The place I hunt now, I might have a chance at 150 should I be extremely lucky, but I hunt for other reasons than the horns. I hunt for the joy it brings me, and the memories that go with each season.

Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Stamford, TX.
Loaded with deer, pigs, and turkey. Big wheat field surrounded by thick brush. Hunting pigs was like flipping a switch. Just put corn in the feeder. When you wanted deer, don't put corn out and hunt the wheat.

There's a few, Junction, TX deer were small but had plenty free ranging axis and other exotics and beautiful piece of land. The one I'm on now in Live Oak County deer seem to be a little above average, plenty turkey, occasional hog here and there, lots of wildlife this year with the rain and its a beautiful place also.

Blanco County 400 acres, between Blanco and Johnson City. Live water with good fishing, big elevation changes, thick brush and a nice ranch house. We owned the place, and I learned just about everything I know about hunting and the outdoors out there. Lots of deer, not incredible antlers but you had a decent chance at taking a nice hill country buck if you hunted hard. I grew up hunting out there with my dad, uncles, cousins and close family friends ... you just can't beat that. Now we all hunt on different places. I can't believe we sold that place a few years ago (aunts started seeing dollar signs after the neighbor sold his place for over $11,000 an acre). Even with that, it was a true blessing to grow up with a place like that to enjoy. Sure miss it though.

Big crew of hunters and lots of fun times back then. After thinking back it wasn't the Mayfield store our hunters stayed in it was the old Juno store north of the Mayfield store where they stayed after it closed. Small world. I currently lease a portion of the Wilson-Hodge Ranch, about 6 miles East of the Mayfield store, and a good friend of mine leases the Mayfield place. I made a visit over there last year and stayed the night in that old rock house. It's some neat country for sure. I've hunted places where I've seen more deer, but the lease I am on now over there is probably my favorite place I have ever hunted. It is so remote and we border some nature conservancy land that doesn't get hunted, so there is plenty of chances for the deer to mature. I am always amazed at the landscape. A lot of people don't even know there are parts of Texas that look like that.
If ducks had horns I'd probably be a duck hunter. I am a horrible deer hunter. Probably the worst. Ever.
