Ashame some folks think that is an ethical shot with a bow. Used to have a pic from the San Angelo area of a buck a young girl took out that had the same wound. Hate seeing that

My daughter shot a buck on youth weekend a few years back that had been shot in the face the previous year. He had healed up completely except that the teeth in one side of his jaw where dislocated. He was huge. Amazing what they can live through.
We never could tell for sure it it was an arrow or a bullet. Considering the bone fragments and busted jaw, we figured a bullet.
Flag shows the shot path.

Could it be that the deer turned really quick and it was not intentional?

Good chance. Or they shot while the animal was feeding broadside but was feeding toward them and it just lifted its head. Many possibilities, but there are plenty of people that aim for the head...and it would be a freak accident but freak accidents don't happen as much as you see this. And naturally, we just assume the worse

Could also be stuck down the side of the neck. I am wondering if this could be one of those moths that was flying down at the same angle at time of the pic. They look similar to that.

If it is an arrow it was probably not the intended target. I'm thinking stxranchman might be right about it being something else. If it's real he could survive it. That sucks for him if it is an arrow.

Impossible to tell from that pic.

VERY possible. My first archery buck was shot at 12 yards. He was completely broadside when I pulled the trigger on the release, and by the time the arrow got there, he had turned toward me to go back the way he came. The arrow went down between his shoulder blades and it was only by God's grace his head wasn't higher. They are amazingly quick.

One reason I'm not a fan of head shots. Too small a target. Not cool to see a deer with it's jaw missing.

I would think that you need a closer picture, or a clear daytime picture in order to confirm that it is an arrow. Either that or if he has multiple pictures of this same deer still showing the suspect arrow. Could definitely be a tracer bug.

I don't know anyone that would intentionally take a head shot with a bow, however I know how quickly a deer can move and a good shot misses its mark and turns bad.

I shot this deer at 30 yards while broadside. I was already drawn on him. He was chasing a doe and I yelled to stop him. He stopped and I fired the arrow. Immediately as I shot he put his head down and started chasing the doe again. The shot went from being a heart/lung shot to an butt/spine shot in a split second. I got lucky and the shot took out his back legs. The arrow broke off 4 inches after the broad head. I got out of my stand and finished him off by stabbing him in the lungs by hand with another arrow. Later the processor (after hearing my story) asked me if I had shot the deer more than once. When I replied no he pulled out the deer's heart showing me that the broke off piece of my arrow was firmly imbedded in it. I guess it bounced off the spine and stuck in the heart.

Don't always assume the worse. Freak accidents do happen. Sometimes a little luck goes a long way.

From last night. Is this an arrow or tracer bug? My tripod is 10 yards to the left of the camera by the way. popcorn
