I was scouting some public land this past weekend, and the adjacent private land had a crop field full of yellow flowering plants or crops that were about knee high. There was a fence and a tree line between us so I didn't get a great look or a picture, so I apologize in advance for the vague question. Does anyone know what they might be? I saw quite a few fresh tracks that I think were going from that field into some dense woods on the public side, so I'm trying to figure out if the plants are something the deer might be eating.

Google Canola(not sure about planting in Texas) and check to see if that is what it looked like. Could also have been a yellow blossom clover(madrid). Could have been mustard but would think it is a bit early.

After some time on google Sunday I initially thought Canola as well, but the yellow was not as dense and vibrant as those pictures. The yellow blossom clover looks very similar to what I saw though, so that might be it. I will try to get a picture of it next time I am out, but thanks for the quick and helpful response.

Clover seems to be the general consensus. I'll try to get you guys a picture to confirm. Unless other ideas come through I'm going to assume its clover and plan my next scouting trip and hunt accordingly. Thanks again for the help everyone.

It is most likely Canola. We are seeing more and more farmers looking for alternative crops here in north Texas and canola seems to be one that is catching on.

I know nothing about canola. If that's what it is, will the deer rely on it for a food source? Other sites gave mixed answers when I googled that question.

Yes, it is sold as food plot seed by several companies. I hunted for Mule Deer in Canola fields in Alberta.
