I've got 475 acres of prime cultivated land that was recently cultivated for corn and disced a few weeks ago after harvest. I have the use of it until March and can plant any crops I want for geese. I doubt I'll plant all the acreage as I don't have a tractor or drill for planting. I'd like to use a broadcast spreader behind an ATV to put a crop in to attract some geese. Any suggestions for what to plant (winter wheat, fescue, rye, etc...) would be greatly appreciated.

Peanuts would be nice in panhandle, rice elsewhere

For this time of year it's wheat or rye grass.

And just something to think about, broadcasting is ok, but you will need to buy more seed if you are going to broadcast.

Broadcasting that much land will run into some serious coin.

If I were you I'd look at prices in the area to lease a tractor and a drill.

You'd be buying less seed if you have a drill so some of the money you will be saving will go into leasing the equipment.

Once again, not sure where you are located or what kind of geese are mainly in your area.

Down here, rice is the primary crop for geese, but we do plant wheat and rye as well.

They will usually hit it later in season, but sometimes they don't hit it much at all.

Thanks feather, I'm in collin county. I'm leaning towards winter wheat but wanted to get some opinions before I spend the coin.

I doubt I'll plant all the acreage, without a drill and tractor, we'll have to make do with a broadcast spreader. Im thinkin if we can get 80 acres planted in one particular spot, if there's geese in the area (and there usually is), they'll find it.

Are you talking about small resident flocks that hang around here all year? I hunt around Collin county quite a bit and I have yet to see large migrator flocks in this area. That seems like a lot of work and money to target resident geese that have plenty of grass and corn stubble fields to feed on all winter long. Im not saying it won't work but just be aware of the cost versus the reward. Good Luck.

If the field will hold water in a few spots, you could blade out a few ponds and you won't need to plant anything!

Residents will follow a daily pattern between 3 large ponds and fields that are already planted. So too late for that.

Yep, luck is a big factor. Hopefully, a nice salad bar should do the trick. And I don't mind spending the money.

We've gotten into resident geese, but there are significant numbers of transient geese that move through the area. We put out 10 acres of Home Depot grass seed last fall in response to some birds moving through and were able to get some flocks in the field a couple weeks after it sprouted. The downside was some jackasses that didn't have permission to hunt the field drove their trucks through the planted sections attempting to shoot the birds. That won't happen this year.

I participated in a US FW waterfowl survey at Hagermann and Texoma yesterday and there are already geese moving into the area. They've gotta eat, and I've got dinner waiting to be served, WW seed to be exact. Once we get a rain forecast it's going in the ground.
