The .243 would get it done for 90% of the shots I take on Whitetail. But, the other 10% is why my .270 Win is my go-to gun for deer.

I've looked at the model 700 and saw a 300magnum.. Since so may are recommending a 30-06 and 243 I figured I would find some middle ground between the two. Any one use one of these?

LOL ... a 300 mag is a 30-06 on steroids.

I've never personally shot a 300 mag, but have been around folks that do shoot them. I wouldn't go near it for a primary rifle.

Yeah, it has a lot of energy and can be very flat shooting for long distances. But, they kick like mules and are kind of overkill for whitetail. I don't think you will be very comfortable shooting it much.

One of the best things about a 270 is you can throw a 130gr round in it that will still knock a deer on its @$$ and you can shoot a lot without bruising your shoulder. It is also pretty flat/fast with that lighter round. The 30-06 is gonna have a little more energy but is also pretty comfortable to shoot with its lighter rounds.

I would only go for a 300 mag if you expect to be shooting more mule deer than whitetail, with elk or something large thrown in too.

If you have a 300 with a good muzzle brake it will kick less than your 270 without one. 2cents

a .270 will take down anything indigenous to Texas.

I've never understood needing a 300 in tx. Different stokes for different folks I guess.

Is there anything that even resembles shoulders left from a 100lb doe?

I always like the wasted meat quote, I have cut out more bloodshot meat from a 22-250 and 243 than I have ever from a 300 win or my 9.3x62 using premium bullets. If I had one gun to hunt whitetail it would be a 9.3x62 or my 325 WSM..I would use it border to border. Plenty of range, nice big bullet, and easy on the shoulder. I always get a kick out of the guys that say a 300 win kicks...try a 500 jeffery or my 470...those kick. I also have yet to find any of my guns obnoxious with a break. I am usually behind them and there is usually less than 7-8 decibels worth of difference...believe me I have measured. Now the concussion wave is another story...just tell your guide to plug his ears and stand back, most don't have a problem with that..especially if your a good tipper! wink

Cabelas has a good sale going on right on several different brands of rifles. Just got a flyer in the mail.

Saw that. I've been thinking of trying the Ruger American, heard mixed reviews. Don't really need it but don't have a ruger, so...

Check out the gun library while you're in Cabelas. They've got some reasonable prices on double rifles.

Depends on area you are hunting, what range do expect to be shooting?
I hunt east Texas, I have a stand in heavy woods along a creek and use a Marlin 45-70, great on hogs, excellent knock down power, no tracking in the thorn bushes required. At 60 yards and in its proven great for multiple harvest of deer and hogs.
I also have a stand in some open pines and use a Marlin 308 where I tend to have longer range shots.

308 Winchester ammo is pretty easy to find right now, 45-70 as well. 308 Marlin, can be found on line right now but I warn you it can disappear from the shelves and web sites. I only use for hunting so a stock of ME 308 is easy for me to keep on hand.

I love my 45-70, for more versatility a 308 is great choice.

I love my 45-70 too, but I wouldn't recommend it as a first and only rifle.

Get a 308 as your post included hogs. Great round and gives you a fighting chance with a running big boar where shot placement is just trying to hit him.
