Is it bad to use inserts? I bought the 30mm rings so that I have the option of switching to a 30mm scope in the future. It seems to me if its all torqued down properly that it should be okay but I thought I'd seek a second opinion.

I have never had any issues with em.. I just dont like the way they look. So I changed all mine.

Wont be a problem. Unless you have Burris Zee rings that have MOA cant built in I'd place the inserts timed 90 degrees from the scope caps. So the seam of scope base to cap is horizontal, make the insert halves seam be verticle.
