Does anyone know anything about this area? Myself and a buddy got drawn for a bow hunt for the end of this month. Is it all river bottom? Any Comp that I should try and get? What stands should I take? Any help would be great and thanks in advance. I'm new to the forum I look forward to talking with everyone.

I don't know much about it, but I do know some guys who have hunted it and scouted it prior and where successful on some surprisingly nice deer. 150ish if I recall. Very thick and necessary to know what your doing and where you are going to be successful. These guys lived within half an hour, so they had an advantage.

How come everybody I meet is a deer hunting expert?

Welcome to the Forum. I hunted there last year. Its a jungle. I hunted a compartment up near the front. Thick as all get out. Couldn't brush in a pop up, it was middle of winter & there was no vegetation whatsoever. Take a climber or a tripod & a 4Wheeler. It had roads cleared through the brush about 30-40 yards wide. Deer would pop out & run across. Pretty much impossible to find trails & hunt inside the brush. Best bet would be to setup on one of the roads. I was there on a management hunt & had several huge bucks within yards. Can't speak for the compartments in back.

Thanks for the info guys, I'm really looking forward to it. Hope the weather is right and the bucks are up cruising around. Was hoping some people on here got drawn as well.

It is very thick but the WMA behind the damn and near the ranger station does have several pipeline right aways that are huntable. The area north and east of Hwy 287 is heavy timber and brush, and a few alligators!

And....our big, tall hairy guy likes to hang out there too! bolt

I also read that they require your atv to be registered and you have to have a atv saftey course.

I live 4 miles from the WMA, I see numerous deer and hogs daily on the Trinty River Authority land "Forebidden Zone" behind the Damn. The part that is off FM 416 is heavly treed with thick underbruch. I recommend a climbing stand. We got 4 inches of rain this past weekend so new growth will be every where. I have not seen any rutting activity yet, but I have seen the bucks break up out of their groups. There are plenty of 140-150 deer in area.

Been out there 3 times. I never had to show anything for my 4 whlr. They are pretty cool out there. They just remind you to use common sense while operating it.
A lock-on stand would be best. Climbers will work on some trees. The units I hunted, trails were easy to find. Find the acorns, you will find the deer.

Great place. but plenty of mosquitos. Thick underbrush and swampy areas. A working thermocell and plenty refills is as important as a gun or bow. No special stickers needed for ATV or UTV's.

Do not scout. It's too thick and you'll jus booger up your spot. Take a 4 wheeler, they don check for the course or helmet. Just be safe. They usually shred the roads. Stay on them. Take a climber or ladder stand and set up at a road junction. Scout from the air. Watch where they cross and move to that area

I live 15 minutes from there near the old J&S meat processing and I've seen lots of awesome deer around the Richland chambers area as well as hogs so get ready for a good hunt.
