If I had to choose I would say Whitetail. But it sure looks like a whitetail/muley cross to me. I saw a cross before on a lease I used to have up in Floyd county.

cool deal??? those of you that are voting, can you tell me why your thinking it is a whitetail or a mule deer. What characteristics are making you sway one way or another. FYI Reagan County has both wt and mule deer, if that helps any. I am not going to bash anyone, just curious how you arrived at your decision

Facial features look like a Muley. But everything else appears whitetail. Whitetail tag.

I voted white tail.
Ears are too small for a muley.
Without seeing the tail, it could be a toss up, pretty sure it is not a hybrid, could be wrong, but I have never seen a hybrid with that much antler.
From what I have gathered from conversations with GW's from that part of the state, the determination of what tag to use lies with the tail.
If it has a tail like a white tail, then that is what it is.
If it has a muley's tail, then it is a mule deer.
Antlers are not as big an indicator of species as many folks believe.
White Tail and Mule Deer are very closely related, with some rsearchers believing that white tails are the results of a cross between mule deer and black tailed deer.

After looking at the first pic, I thought muley. The others around the feeder tell me whitetail. That deer may very well have some muley blood in his lines, but he is heavy on the whitetail side. Spent last 15 years hunting in Panhandle and KS, never even seen ahybrid, even though I know the do exist.

even from the second pic of the ears, you still think it is a wt??? I agree on the tail, I have no pics of it, and I am not trying to steer anyone astray, I just don't have em. The first pic.................doesn't look like a mulie to you??? Where he is looking at you???? I see something distinct in the antlers, that makes me sway just a bit more also in the head (size) and color. You also touched on something very STRONGLY Randall, that the antlers could not be a hybrid............why too much for a wt and about the right size for a nice mulie???

That's true, it wouldn't be the deciding factor for which tag to use...but it is more characteristic for a muley than a whitetail.

We always have both at our feeders, both mulies and wt. Whether we agree or disagree, one thing for sure he is a HOSS!!!

This is just an aside from the topic, but from what I have heard from TP&W biologists, I do not believe they have found any evidence of cross breeding between white tails and muleys, in the Panhandle.
Down in the Trans-Pecos they definitely can and do cross, and once you see on of the hybrids, you won't forget it.
I have been watching the things for going on 12 years now on the ranch I do my hunts on.
I can understand where Roy is coming from with this, because from TP&W information, there is an area out around the Fort Stockton/McCamey area, about 100 miles or so in diameter that hybrids are fairly common in.

I hunt in country with both and this deer has a mix of features could rule it either. I think the dichotomous branching in his antlers is present. I believe the relative size of his ears are deceiving. The bridge between the eyes on his skull plate looks like a mule deer as does something about his body frame. When all else fails, the tail will tell the tale. I'd whistle at him, if he's a whitetail that tail will come up. If he is a mule deer, he will stand there real stupid like.
I hunt managed lands and if we were down to a single permit of either species, I would want to see the tail before I shot him. In the field, we have to consider this for about half the deer we look at.
