Hey guys, I got drawn for a nilgai hunt on the LRGV East lake tract in January. If anyone has any info about hunting there or just any info on the refuge it would be much appreciated. I've never even seen the place. Not sure if you should still hunt or spot and stalk.

I hunted there last January. Is this the "exotic" hunt with a rifle or the "deer" hunt with slug guns?

This hunt is for nilgai/hog (im not after hogs) only on east lake tract with rifle. It is January 31-Feb. 1st. Anything you could tell me about the place and how to approach hunting it would be really appreciated!!!

My uncle is going with me. You can have a non-hunting assistant. I don't know if I'm suppose to still hunt, spot and stalk, or what.

Just checking back. Been tied up with family. Will contact you via PM tomorrow.

The hunting is left up to you but I would plan on sitting or still hunting. Spot and stalk is pretty much impossible due to the thick brush on the refuge. Spot and stalk is pretty much a coastal thing, on private land. The NWR does not manipulate their vegetation for big game so it is thick, the target species on this NWR is the ocelot so the ground cover is thick to support the mice and whatnot that they eat. You will see a nilgai no more than about 10 seconds before you get a shot or not.

What cartridge are you going to hunt with? I will tailor what I send you based on that.

Are you a local guy? There is no camping on the refuge and only a small parking lot (with no camping). Everyone will walk in from this spot. This, coupled with the country, makes it a tough hunt. Hopefully, this is what you wanted!
