As dove season is upon us, I am contemplating a retriever again. Problem is the wife will have the darn thing house trained before I get to toss the first rubber duckey. So, is there a short hair retriever that comes in a small footprint you would recommend?

Some of the spaniel s come to mind but obviously not short hair. Is it shedding you are worried about? What's small to you?
I'll take a Black Female every time.

Yes the shedding. Had a golden before and swore I would never have another long haired dog in the house again. A dachshund is small so something a little bigger?

There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

Vizslas have short hair and though they shed, it is not as bad as most. Mine often clean themselves like cats. Properly acclimated and doing your part to keep them safe, they handle the heat very well. They are energetic, but with patience they can be trained for retriever work. Expect a little more time to mature for more disciplined retriever work, but both of mine were retrieving dove and ducks on hunts by 9 months old. Some lines will average smaller and females will generally be smaller as well. Look for breeders having bloodlines known for natural retrieving ability and or parents that are good retrievers. They are wonderful family dogs, but know they demand attention and will want to be at your side always, so not for everyone. An army of ignored Vizslas could destroy the world. Huntmore Vizslas would be one good contact for you. http://www.huntmorevizslas.com/

Might look into a Lacy. Not a bred retriever but you can train one to do anything. Mine opens and closes doors. Very smart dogs but need attention. I was afraid my wife had ruined mine but didn't.

I was in a similar predicament and I went with a Boykin Spaniel. They are excellent dogs and are as much at home in the house as in the field. They are also less prone to heat stroke in the dove field but don't take cold water as well as labs. There is a very good breeder near Houston, Greg Copeland Texas-Trace. I have a one year old male from him, he weighs 40#, has a medium length coat, and is very birdy. He loves to hunt, swim and retrieve as much as any lab I have met. Only thing with these dogs is that they have a softer temperament than labs meaning they don't take a heavy handed owner well or excessive correction in training. My only complaint is that they tend to get burs in their fur but you learn to love the floppy ears. Watson is 4 months in this picture.

I have a toller. Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. He's maxed out at 40lbs. One of the fastest and most agile dogs out there. High drive. Smarter than most humans I know. Bred for ducks in cold water but do fine upland and tracking pretty much anything that has a scent...
As for shedding. It is almost unnoticeable..

Vizsla is your ticket. PM sent. I always thought the Vizslas were bigger than GSPs or even Brittanys (i know, not short hair). Is that not the case?

I have a 60lb vizsla, and a 42lb vizsla. Its all in the breeding. With GSP, Vizsla, and even Weimaraners, the FT bred dogs usually are smaller than the others, but I would still look at the parents weights.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.
