Maceration (bucket, water and a week of 90 degree days) Degreasing (heated tank 115 degrees, with dawn and ammonia for the extra greasy skulls soak, replace water weekly, soak till water stays clear, no definite amount of time) Whitening (peroxide, liquid type for bleaching hair, sometimes use basic white also) Seal with paraloid b72 Mount to plaque

Cool methods guys. Where do you get the beetles BullDog? Yeah Texas Tax I have heard that, but I have never had any issues and I just simmer. Do you recommend just letting it soak without heat?

I just use regular Walmart peroxide that is $1 a quart. After boiling in water and most of the flesh is removed, I just boil it in the peroxide, whitens the skull the same as the salon peroxide. I also discovered that if I leave the skull hang in a tree for a few weeks, bugs and ants remove most of the flesh and icky stuff, makes my job much easier.

I have had this colony for 5 years. I got them from a guy in Houston. They take some getting used to.
This is my 4th colony. As I killed my first 3, cause I didnt know what I was doing.

I have my taxidermist do any Euro mounts and he has them done using beetles. What he has told me is that boiling can loosen teeth (which is why he has them done using beetles) and apparently you can over boil the skulls and do damage if you are not careful. He has had more than one customer come in with a damaged Euro mount that was over boiled.

Is there someone trust worthy in the DFW area that does euro with the beetles? I have done a few myself with the boiling method and they turned out OK but not exactly how I want them. I have had a skull in the freezer for a year or two and just want to find a trustworthy taxidermist to clean it all nice like. There has got to be somebody out there.

You can get beetles online. But you have to establish a big big colony to clean a deer in a reasonable amount of time.
Every 2 days a deer goes in and one comes out of my beetles. They are hot and clean very very well.
IMO, beetles are the only way to go.

I use the ol stink bucket then dawn and/or ammonia to degrease and no whitening the last couple years I've started liking the look of natural bone color and when ALL the grease is out its actually pretty white.

cmc, while I do agree that maceration is the best method on SOME animals.....and degreasing is crucial.
I agree that IF degreasing is done right it leaves the skull a good natural color.
But most people often overlook, or under do the degreasing step. Which is THE most important.

I skin mine then get all soft tissue/brains off with high pressure water before boiling or hot water treatment. I don't own a pressure washer so off to car wash I go! Just did my Red Stag and some guy in his vett pulled in too close as I hit brain cavity with the pressure! Sorry dude!
Brayden (Lazy L's Southern Comfort) you will be missed! You were more than a pet you were my reason to rise and return for many days! You were my rock! 12/26/03-10/25/13
