I also was in the same boat a couple years ago. Went in going to buy a nice compact light benelli. Found one at my local gunshop. When i told the owner who i was buying it for, he grabbed that benelli and a remington 11-87 and headed outside with me in tow. He said shot them booth and see which one your wife would like. The remington was so much lighter in recoil then the benelli, as the benelli was lighter and not gas operated. He could of not gave a dam and sold me the much higher priced shotgun, but thats why i shop at my local little store. I would vote for remington11-87, 1100, beretta, or the weatherby sa-08, I shoot mostly my citori sporting clays o/u, but i do have a franchi affinity and weathery sa-08, i like the weatherby better.

My son has a Mossberg 920 20 gauge, and we have been very impressed with it as far as reliability and recoil go. The gun is super light weight, and the recoil is light enough that my 65 lb. 8 year old daughter can shoot it repeatedly with no bruises or sore shoulders. It will shoot 2 3/4" and 3" shells, and will not break the bank.

X3 on the 1100. I've shot the same one for ever. My 13 yr old daughter has had her eye on it for a couple years and she shot it finnaly and I'm shopping for another. Very low recoil and it eats any shell I feed it with out jamming. Congrats in getting UR better half involed in the outdoors with you. Will make for some great memory's as well as less gripping when u want to go hunting. Lol

While I really like this shotgun, it isn't available in 20 gauge.

Just for fun and maybe in the future for my kids I ve bought a benelli Cordoba 20G. I must say that the gun shoots verry light loads and because of the ventilated barrel almost no recoil. Verry verry verry expensive gun but I think it s money well spent.

A400 with kick off enough said IMHO don't waste money on the K/O. My A400 Xplo 20 is light and the recoil is hardly noticeable

Depends on how much you want to spend but on the low end the Weatherby SA-08 is probably the best buy IMO at $500. I bought the youth model for my 13 year old daughter a month ago and she loves it, she had been shooting a Berretta 391 Urika 20 gauge but the Weatherby appears to fit her a little better and she says the recoil is not bad. Just make sure it is a gas operated semi for lighter recoil. If you want to spend 2 or 3 times more than that the other guns mentioned are sweet guns.

Hands down Remington 1100! It's been in the family for years! Son shoots it wife shoots it and small guests! I camo tape it for the ducks ! And pull the tape for quail just to show how pretty of a gun it is! Never had 1 (one) issue with it!

Not sure if this matters to you but I had a Remington 1100 20ga and it only shot 2 3/4" shells. Other than that it was a great gun. I have a Benelli M2 now and really like it. My wife wants a shotgun as well, the M2 isnt too big but doesnt have much of a recoil pad on it. My wife 5'9 and is a personal trainer so I'm not sure if she'd even need a youth model.

my dad has an old 1100 that is a great gun shoots like a dream but the 2-3\4 is a downfall. i will have to find a rem 1187 for get to try and i work with a guy who just bought his son the weatherby and im going to see about borrowing that to let her try it. i don't want to spend a 1k on a gun until i know she is hooked. but she needs something other than the little pump 20ga she shooting now. She has shot my moms benelli super light 20 and it fit her well.

TriStar Viper G2. Very low recoil and affordable. I've had one for 2 years and love it. Never failed to fire and my wife has shot it without any problems. She's about 5'6".
