Good evening. I'm new to deer hunting, but through research and speaking with some experienced hunters, I've decided to go with .270 win cartridge. In a lefty and was looking into either going with Savage Arms or Weatherby Vanguard bolt action. From my understanding, Savage is the only vendor out of the two that makes left handed rifles, but some info out on the web says that you can simply adjust to using a right handed rifle as a lefty. Any opinions/insight in welcome. Even if you believe if be better off investing in a different make/model than what I've listed. Thanks.

Weatherby is a good name. But you are paying for the name. The savage is a good choice. I would look at tikka.
Where are you going to be hunting?

What about left vs.right handed rifles for a lefty. Do y'all think it really matters too much or should I try and get a lefty model?

I am left handed. Absolutely get a left handed bolt action! Yoy cannot efficeintly cycle a right handed bolt action when unsupported. Even shooting on a bench or prone you will have to break position if shooting a right handed rifle, left handed.
+1 on a Tikka. Be advised that Tikka only makes left hand in Stainless so you'll only have that to pick fro. and they cost about $60 more. I just purchased one for myself as a donor rifle to build a custom from. Don't limit yourself to 270. There are plenty other good cartridges out there and finding a left hand Tikka means you may need to be a bit flexible in what the rifle is chambered in. 260 Rem, 7mm-08, 308 Win, 30-06 and several others will all be fine deer rifles. The 260 Rem, 7mm-08, and 308 would be my top picks, in that order.

Rifle is a big investment, I wouldn't compromise. If you are left handed, I say buy a left handed rifle. I am a right handed shooter, and I wouldn't buy a lefty. Last week I came across an amazing Savage Mark II with highly figured walnut stock I was going to buy, but it was a lefty. Even though I can cycle a left handed bolt, it just seems weird.

There are many good brand rifles out there. You picked a great caliber. I picked up a Sako 75 in 270 win that is in pristine condition. Been looking for years and finally found one

Excellent info. So I'm def going with a lefty action setup. I'm not trying to limit myself to a specific cartridge, but I'm the your of person where I have to commit to a focus. If I come a across a lovely rifle in another caliber like 7mm or 25/30-06, I'm definitely open to going that route, but as of current, I'm seeking out a good rifle chambered in .270. I assume you all are referring to the Tikka T3 lite as that's all I've been seeing while digging thru Google. Correct? Btw, do you all search online, check local shops, pawn shop surf, or all of the above when seeking out gun deals?

I go to big gun retailers when I am checking out guns because they typically have large selections. I like to physically handle the gun. After I have looked at everything available, then I start the bargain hunt. I like to check websites like Gunbroker, Gallery of Guns, and Buds. I also check out the local stores.
Walmart generally has limited selection, but great prices on guns. Box store hunting stores generally have great sales around holidays.

You could get an encore and expand into different calibers so you have more options. Ambidextrous!

I agree with motox, you can't beat a single shot for it's ambi qualities and the ability to swap barrels to different calibers.

I'm def open to adding a single shot rifle to my collection at some point. Encore is a bolt action made by Thompson, right? I'll prob check out a Tikka at a local site tho and shoot for a lefty model in the T3 lite flavor if ask things check out as I think it would be the most favoring choice as my first hunting rifle. Thanks everyone.

At Cabelas in the Gun Library, they generally have a rack of used left handed rifles, it's worth a look.
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

Savage every day and twice on Sunday. You can shoot it until your heart is content then change the rifle barrel down the road if you like. Aftermarket parts are readily available, I am putting together a whole rifle with just the Savage action.
Accutriggers are great, the target ones can be set down to 1 pound. I would recommend a lighter caliber for your first rifle. Nothing wrong with a .243 win or 25-06 if you want to stay with the long action. Also, I would recommend getting a savage 10/110, 11/111, 12/112, 16/116 type rather than the Axis. The Axis still shoot fine, I am just not a huge fan of those budget rifles, you get what you pay for.

At about $1100, or 1/3rd less than a SAKO, you can get a Montana Rifle Co ASR aka American Standard Rifle in a wood blue lefty, or for $100 more a SS/Wood lefty in your choice of now more than the original 22 calibers. Check out the new website that has just started to come up at www.MontanaRifleCompany.com ...or mebbe MRC.com. Both are TM'ed names, and the guns are built in Kalispel MT. Several other configurations to choose from in a B&C Medallion based line of blue or SS, and the little bit bigger bore AV Series in 35 Whelen, both 375's and some larger Mediums like the 416's & then a DG Series with some BIG African calibers. The new website has been under construction, but now shows some new calibers like 26 Nosler, 280AI and 6XC. There is an abbreviated spec sheet drop down below when you click on a particular model. They are also showing a couple new tactical and target guns too in calibers like 6.5x284, 308, 300WSM & a 300WMg in the VT's and a 338 Lapua or 338 Norma Mg in the tricked out tactical - picc rail/muzzie break-flash hider/threaded etc, and both have the same very innovative fully adjustable LOP & Cheek Height stock. These are all off of a pre '64 style Winchester M70 design, with some additional improved features to not infringe on the TM. I could do a 6.5x284 & a??? 7x57 or 280AI or 7WSM - they are missing a 7STW but have a 7RUM in addition to the usual 7-08 & 7RMg...yadda yadda too many choices makes my head hurt...but still need a 9.3x62 in an AV instead of the Whelen IMO. Good call on the .243 or 25/06, they will be more enjoyable to shoot.

So you are where I was a year ago. I also felt I could overcome getting a righty. But I decided that the day I could walk in a sporting good store and buy a left handed 270 off the shelf ( without special ordering it) I was gonna buy it regardless of brand. I looked for a year, no lefty. Then out of the blue walked in gander mountain and found a left handed Tikka 3 lite on the shelf. Bought it on the spot. That rifle is so smooth and shots damn good. I am so glad I waited for a lefty, and even more pleased it was a tikka 3. I love that rifle. In the big picture, getting a righty would not be impossible to get used to. But if you hold out you might find exactly what you want, like I did. Tikka is the real deal. If you want a 270. Get it. I almost talked myself out of a 270 and into a 25/06...it's not like a handgun when you're gonna shoot 200 rounds. The recoil on 270 is not as bad as I expected. Get what u want= no regrets

I'm a lefty, plenty of manufacturers make left handed rifles; Remington, ruger(probably the most common left handed rifles are rugers) savage, CZ, Winchester, browning and weatherby. I believe that Sako/Tikka make one as well.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Ruger American is now available in a lefty.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Stupid question but nobody has asked you....... Have you verified you are left eye dominant? Make sure of that before you assume. If so, then get a left hand rifle, but if you are right eye dominant and operate with your left hand, get a single shot or get a right stocked with left hand action.
