Just wanted to post some pics and some quick details of my Moose hunt this year. I visit here in the Exotics section with a bunch of you guys so I hope no one gets upset its not an exotic.

I hunted again with my good buddy Wade Renfro ( Renfros Alaskan Adventures )out of Bethel and hunted the Killbuck mountains for a dropoff hunt. I saw a LOT of moose and literally passed on 4 60"+ bulls the first morning and then took this 70" GIANT in the evening of day 1. Made a Long stalk and ended up taking him at 152 yards with my .338 Win mag pushing 210gr Nosler partitions.

It's good to see that the .338/210 Nosler is still doing the job. I took my own first moose with the same load on the Hoholitna some 25 years ago. But my 60-incher pales beside your big 70.

I've heard there really good to eat to...what's your opinion on that?

Personally, I believe that moose meat is the best eating of all North American big game. It's far superior to whitetail, pronghorn and caribou, and a notch above elk. Best of all, the meat from one moose can fill a good-size freezer; just imagine a backstrap that is as long as you are tall!

This hunt was planned last year just after I took a great bull in nearly the same location. My buddy Wade and I couldn't wait to return this year.
After months of anticipation it was finally September 1st and my journey was about to begin. Living here on Kodiak Island, Ak...every "road trip" is a journey. My first leg of the trip was a 14 hour ferry ride to Homer, Ak that made a couple pit stops in small villages. There were also quite a few Moose hunters on board traveling north for their annual Moose Camp, which made the trip go a little quicker with the talk of Moose hunting, tactics, calling, gear and yes...."which caliber is best?"...hahaha.
I parked my truck in Anchorage so I could haul meat/horns /gear back home after the trip.
Arriving in Bethel I found that Wade's first hunter hade killed a Monster 61" Bull that would make all time B&C...things were looking good!
Wade my friend Nate and Myself finally had our gear in the plane and were headed even further north. The bush plane ride was only about an hour and we were preparing to land on the same hill top as last year...BUT...as we were on final I could see something that was not there last year...A MONSTER Grizzly. We did a go around and decided we better not land there because we didn't want to have any issues with him , so we headed to a rigetop another 3 miles away. After a handful of approaches and low flybys Wade hade the hill figured out and we set down on top in less than 150'! Not bad for a 3800 lb plane , 3 guys and gear.
That Grizzly kinda changed the fate of our hunt. If not for him it would have been over 5 miles to where I killed my bull and we just would not have gone that far.
The first day of actual hunting dawned clear and cool. We could glass right from camp and Moose were just below us in the valley out of the wind. That morning I could have taken a number of great bulls, but decided to look over the ridge behind camp. Wade spotted the bull at about 2.5 miles away through the Swarovski 60x spotting scope and instantly we new it was a special bull. We closed the distance to 520 yards and then the waiting game began. after 6 hours of him just laying around we decided it was time to make a move as the 2 other bulls and 2 cows left him and we had a better chance of making a stalk without getting busted. Some cow calling got him to ease down the drainage and we had the wind right so we made a dash to cut him off.
We were able to scoot down through the willows and alders to a little knob above where we last saw him. He hadn't moved far and was coming up a little draw towards me at a slight quartering to direction. I had just a second to get on the sticks and steady up for the shot. I was all prepared to touch it off but had to wait a second because he was grunting and head rocking coming up that draw. When he rocked his head left , his antlers completely covered his vitals, so I paused and when he rocked right I held just on the point of his shoulder and squeezed one off from my .338 win mag. It was "Boom,...Thuuump" as the bullet hit and he went straight down. 152 yards..not a far shot but a little tricky with the brush and all.
It was 830 pm..we had time to gut and remove 1 hind quarter, prop him open, then head back to camp.
We strolled into camp at 1130, but with the aid of a clear night and bright moon..it was a nice hike back.
The next 2 days we cut up the bull, packed it to a spot we could get a plane in ( 500 yards)and got it back to our main camp.
We got fogged in the last day and a half before we could take off,...but that's to be expected in Alaska.
Can't wait till next year..only 11 months 15 days....

A drop off hunt like this one is $5500 - $6500 depending on how many flights in/out with meat. This hunt can still be done as a non resident non guided at this time. If you want to do it...don't wait. I could see Alaska going to fully guided on Moose as with Sheep, Goat and Brown Bear.
I actually met a few guys from Texas on this hunt as they were flying out to different camps.

Its a possibility you met a couple of friends of mine. They just got back from somewhere up there. One got a sheep the other a nice Moose. Big country so low odds you met them, but not sure how may air strips service that country.

Met a Guy and his bride last Tuesday...they were from Texas and just married on the Saturday before. It was their HUNTINGMOON !!

Congratulations. I've been on two moose drop camps without success. I saw bulls, but they where always pretty far away and by the time I got there, they where gone, or they where on the other side of a big river. Have you ever watched an animal in closer rifle range and know there was no way of getting to him?

Prices have gone crazy on moose. I can't believe anybody would pay over $20,000 for a guided moose hunt. What is even more amazing was at the Dallas Safari Club convention, they had two year waiting lists!!!!!

I went to South Africa this year and pretty much spent everything I had and then some. I don't know if I can afford to go anywhere next year, but 2016 should be good. I sure hope they still have non resident moose hunting then.
