What would yall suggest as a reasonably priced boat option for this duck season? A lot of the water I used to hunt is gone now so I'm looking to expand my reach a bit. As a college kid, my budget is a little lower than some of the setups I've seen. I don't really mind taking an old jon boat and trying to brush it up; I just figured yall may have some great ideas too though.

I bought a kayak last season and have really liked it for duck hunting. I don't hunt out of it, just use it for transportation then stash it and hunt. It can get to a lot of places that a jon boat w/ an outboard can't. Biggest downside is if your buddies wanna go, they have to have their own.

I used a 14'jon and 15 hp mercury from college till I was 42! Skirt the edges when windy take lots of sheer pins!!! Get as far back as you can throw camo over the boat " then DITCH the boat " and become a part of a tree! I hunted fork for years guys would blow by me at 5am lol but hey I still got to hunt! And always shot ducks! Now I'm 44 with plenty of income!!! My go to boat is a 1542 tracker with 24hp longtail Not much more than my college boat! If your trying to hunt out of your boat your learning wrong!!!!

My first boat was a 10' Jon boat. $100 and piled a BUNCH of ducks in it for 4 years.

I'll be hunting lakes usually. I'm currently leaning towards a jon boat as some of y'all have suggested. Had never really thought about a kayak though. Anybody else use these?

What would yall suggest as a reasonably priced boat option for this duck season? A lot of the water I used to hunt is gone now so I'm looking to expand my reach a bit. As a college kid, my budget is a little lower than some of the setups I've seen. I don't really mind taking an old jon boat and trying to brush it up; I just figured yall may have some great ideas too though. That is about as cheap as you are going to be able to go, a used jon boat off of craigslist. What they are asking and what you should pay are two totally different things. I will pass on some of my knowledge. Humans are greedy and you can use their greed to your advantage. The seller is not your friend. He won't treat you like a friend and never should you assume he is going to. So never treat him like a friend. Be honest, be polite but don't get suckered into "He is doing me right". Now find what you want and take pictures of it. Post them here. Let us price it for you if you don't know how to just yet. get informed about what you are buying and get informed about what you are selling. Have that confidence before you wade off into a haggling deal. Now when you find a deal, take the amount of cash you would spend on the boat, that pre-established amount. Split that pile of cash into 4 pockets. Start with offering 25% of the asking price and land where you feel comfortable. If you do this haggling a lot, you will get really good at it and you will be shocked at how little people will really take. Now when you go to haggling, have half your money in $20 dollar bills and the other half in $100. When you make that initial offer, use $100s and spread them out where the pile looks huge. Do not give it to them, just show it to them. You have to learn to read a deal here. If the seller looks at the money, continues to talk and doesn't take his eyes off the money, you got him. If he doesn't fold then pocket the money and act as if you are going to walk off. Find a reason to stay then present the pile again. If that doesn't get him then drag out that big arse stack of $20s. Make that stack look even bigger with the $20s. That usually smacks about 90% of the sellers out there. I make a large percentage of my yearly income flipping stuff. Last year I bought a jeep for $1500 and sold it 15 minutes later for $3000. If a fella made $150,000 a year, that would be 1% of income in 15 minutes. It doesn't take many of those and you're rolling in it. My mother was an antique dealer as I grew up. I learned from the best wheeler dealer on the planet. You talk about poker face, she was the best. She would walk away on a dime. Don't be afraid to walk away if you are not getting the greatest deal out there. Even though the seller owns the property, it is the money that is driving the deal. You own the money.

I'm assuming you're at A&M?? I had a bass boat and my best friend had a duck boat so we kinda had it made when I was there. If you can't afford a decent rig I would suggest going to the DU meetings there is bound to be a few guys in there with boats....become their best friend. PM me if you need any help.

What is your budget? I run across boats all the time. As a matter of fact the last boat I bought and sold is now in College Station. I haggled with a seller(best haggling confrontation with a seller I have had in years). I finally won after a brutal hour. I paid 50% plus $25 to make him think he won. My nephew wouond up liking the boat and bought it from me. I got one rule when it comes to selling, don't make money on family. I sold it to him for what I had in it. He fishes it all the time.
So let me know your budget and if I see something I will let you know.

lol if he tried those haggling techniques with me he would probably pay more than the least I would actually take for the item just cause of principal. ive seen people haggle with cash in their hand and I think its just unprofessional, unless you are dealing with someone where that cash is really gonna change their life. the only time I have ever pulled money out of my pocket was when it was 12,000 and I was trying to buy a classic car and I told him if he wanted to sell it I was there to buy it today so lets do business

From one broke college kid to another. Get you a 1542 with a 25 hp tiller steer motor on it. Scrimp save recycle beer cans and then start looking out of state to get a better deal. You can find them in ark and Louisiana for about 1500$ make sure you get titles for the boat and motor and learn to fix it when it breaks.
That was my first duck boat and I wish I would have never sold it sometimes. I've got an 1860 now and I'm going out tomorrow morning in a buddies 1542 because my steering cable is locked up.
The reason I say a 1542 tiller is its small enough to get into a lot of places but big enough you can still pile three guys a dog and decoys and scoot across a cove to get to the duck hole. And there's a whole lot less to break on small tiller jon than there is on a bigger remote steer boat. Boats are expensive and you aren't going to have alot of money for awhile. Even if you get a deal on something nicer or bigger your still going to foot the bill to fix it.
Just my 2 cents that I wish I had right now to get me a steering cable.
