Here are some pictures of my deer from this season. I got a doe and a spike with my bow, and then the week before Christmas I got to go out for the morning hunt on Saturday, and my old buck that I had nicknamed Broke Leg showed up. I have gotten pictures of this old buck on my game cam since 2003, and I estimated him to be at least 3 1/2 back in 2003, which would make him at least 8 ½ this year. His right front leg had been broken sometime prior to 2003, and he was easily identifiable with the crippled leg. He would always hang around my area during the summer and early fall, then towards the end of September he would disappear. He would then show back up on pictures in January or February. Well this year I was surprised to see he showed back up on pictures the 1st week in December, and I decided to hold out for him. On Saturday morning there were 3 deer at my feeder before good light, and I was afraid they were going to leave before it got shooting light. It finally got light enough that I could tell one of the deer had a good rack, but it was still dark enough that I couldn't tell if it was Broke Leg. Then all 3 deer threw up their heads and looked up the road past me. I thought they were going to bolt and run, but they just stood there watching behind me. With his head up and facing me, I was able to see that the bucks left browtine was 6 or seven inches long, and I knew that ole Broke Leg had always had a tall browtine on the left side. Finally the deer relaxed and went back to feeding, when he turned I could see the crippled leg and new for sure it was him. I put the shot just behind the shoulders, and got a double lung hit, and he went about 60 yards and went down. I have included a couple of pictures of him from 2005 and 2006. I believe he peaked out back in 2006 and was on his way back down. The last picture shows him on 12-3-2008, and you can count his ribs. I don’t know if he would have made it to next year or not. He field dressed at 90 lbs. His right front leg was 4 to 6 inches shorter than the left leg, and the hoof was deformed from the way he had to walk on it. I had mixed emotions about taking him, I always looked forward to seeing him make it through till the next year, but I was glad to take him before he went down too far and the coyotes got him.

lynn..the way they were describing your deer,before i saw the pix,thought it was the big buck i saw last season..but that deer had no handicap...so the genetics are out there...great deer..look forward talking with you next year

Interesting story! It's amazing how tough game animals are and take their injuries in stride. I agree he might not have made another year and am glad he had a quick death.
