So I decided to take my Chesapeake dove hunting on opening day and it was kinda funny. I shot the first bird and we went to find it and after about 2 mins of searching I began to give up. When I turned around this was what I found She was tapped out after about 3 birds. I guess Chesapeakes are not bred to be south Texas dove dogs

How old is this dog?
The pic is blurry so I guess the point is he/she found it when you gave up? Maybe trust the dog a bit more.
A good soaking in water will help, its darn hot in many part of Texas on the opener. Having a coat like that is not the best choice for hot weather no but many use labs so I dont see how they could do too much better.
I'll take a Black Female every time.

Looks like she is getting the hang of it. Just keep plenty of water for her to drink...

She's 5 MO. This was actually my first dove hunt. I kind of figured she'd get hot, so I hunted from my cooler and she got plenty of water. I don't really have anywhere that I can shoot around her so I just wanted to get her out and shoot the gun a little bit and if I got lucky enough, let her pick a bird up. The hunt showed me a lot. 1. shes not gun shy, 2. we need to work on hard mouth issues, hopefully this will sort out when she get a little older (force). 3 she's got a good nose in the brush. 4 I cant wait till big duck season when I think she be as little better

Great feeling when your pup does what you had hoped, expected. Kinda like a proud poppa.

Cool pic of the !Chesapeake, she has "prize" and knows it. I carry /small back pack (plus decoys and ammo..sort of looks like I'm off to make war than hunt doves :P ), in my Dogs water plus a small igloo water cooler at the truck for mine and any other poor dog that maybe there guardian didn't bring water...Keeping the hydrated in Texas Summer..its officially summer here first 21 days of season....can be a trick. I too pour water on the coat. Also remember that the avg dogs body temps run hotter than ours at about 101 degree!
The way things should be are not often the way things are.....

I wouldn't worry about the hard mouth too much yet, she's a pup and they love chewing up a lot of stuff. She could outgrow it. Gotta love seeing the pup retrieve so instinctively though! Gives you good hope for the future, I'm sure she'll make one heck of a hunting partner and friend. Congrats!
