Anyone hunt deer out on the public land of LBJ grasslands? It looks amazing there has to be a good amount of deer.

A few years back I heard a story from a friend about a bad experience with too many other hunters out there. A year after that another friend told me the same thing. Me being an idiot had to see for myself, and now I refuse to ever step foot out there again. WAYYYYYYYYYY over hunted, flat out dangerous at times!

I wasn't sure if that would be the case. It's only archery hunting correct? I thought there would be so much land you wouldn't see another person if you go deep enough

There is archery and muzzle loader and shotgun, but there are plenty of deer out there. I jumped three on Monday and found some great spots while scouting, but yes you have to be willing to walk and put in the time.

It's typical public land. You have to learn its strengths and weaknesses to be successful. Avoid weekends. Find overlooked units and spots. Study maps. Hunt hard. Things like that. It's not easy out there, but it can be done.

Put in for a doe permit. Find a remote area way back off in the boonies and hunt hard. I killed a nice 8 pt before the AR's out there once. I knew where they were traveling from private land back to the grasslands. Remington slug gun did the job. We went out there a couple years ago just to look and it was eat up with hunters. If you're a bow hunter you're better off buying a corp land permit.

No doe permits anymore, just doe days around thanksgiving time, just check the TPWD book. Get the map from the game warden office in Decatur and go scouting, no atv's, etc allowed, have to drive on roads only. Their there, you just have to find them.

If you hunt archery then you can shoot doe during archery only or like jimbo said only thanksgiving weekend. There are deer there and if you put in leg work you can find them. I have jumped deer on almost every scouting trip I have been on out there.

I've never hunted out there, but I used to go camping there when I was in high school. Lots of traffic even out of deer season. I've heard the same thing a lot of these guys are saying about it being overcrowded during the season as well. I did talk to a guy one time at the archery shop in Cabela's that showed me some pictures of some super mature deer he had shot out there. Don't remember scores, or even what they might have scored, but I remember mass like most of us dream of. He had found a honey hole that didn't see many people.

I suppose if a man did the scouting and really got to know the property you could be pretty successful. That guy at Cabela's told me those deer weren't flukes, and he sees a lot of good deer in that area that he hunts. It's always stuck in the back of my mind, and if I ever have the time, I'd love to get out there and find his honey hole.

If ducks had horns I'd probably be a duck hunter.
I am a horrible deer hunter. Probably the worst. Ever.

Stop by the office off 287, sometime. They should have some pics up. There was a huge nontypical shot there several years ago, and a very nice typical shot on privateand next to public. There's also a few exotics.

There is the occasional spotted tree rat, or there was a young Spanish(Spain not Mexico) or Italian girl working at frillys. But I think that is about as exotic as you are going to find.

Waterfowl - The Grasslands is hands down the most crowded public hunting land in North Texas. The majority of hunters there are disrespectful of others and will set up 50 yards away. The place is dangerous.

The only time I have ever seen another car out there is when for some reason I went up on a weekend. I spend a LOT of time out there during the week, and I have never seen anyone else, but then again I haven't been up there yet during the peak of deer season yet.
