Well boys I'm officially put for rifle hunting CO mulies and Elk this year.
But that's a good thing

Hunting archery season for elk/mulies now. NM ranch I was going to be hunting just got sold. I still don't understand why CO won't go back to a unused tag trade policy

Bobo, think of all the poor souls that won't be chasing elk and mulies this fall. Many of them don't even know what they're missing.

Congrats, Guns Up! Unit 71? Any reports from the unit would be appreciated. no, not 71. its an OTC unlimited archery tag. Can be used in a bunch of different units. We went last year and were on atleast 3 bulls a day for a week straight. what sucks is every single time they were one or two steps from deaths door. This year we are going to make it happen. we are modifying our tactics and plans so we can bring home a big ol bull.

Hopefully that works out for you. Getting the encounter is hard enough. Closing the deal with archery equipment really makes it tough.

Sneaky, IMO, archery hunters have more advantage than you will during 2nd. When I was doing the "stick and string" thing, I had much more "close encounters" just due to the timing and season (rut and hunting pressure). Agree on the "closing the deal" thingy, that's one of the "fine details" LOL Bow hunting elk is a heck of an adrenaline rush. Good luck Guns up, cant wait to see the photos

That's true, however, when I am rifle hunting, and I get a reasonable shot, it's a done deal. When I try to shoot anything with my bow, I come unglued. It's bad enough I'm surprised I haven't blacked out, yet. Even drawing back on something like a coyote makes me tremble and lose all coherent thought. It's one reason I don't do it as much as I used to. I worked on it a lot and could at least control myself enough to make a clean kill, but I felt like I had just survived a car wreck, afterwards.

Yes sir, I like the "cost vs odds" of having a rifle tag now days LOL.. Have given some serious though to getting myself a smoke pole and going that route, but have very limited knowledge on BP, but feel confident I would have little trouble getting around some elk if I did. hmm

Yeah, BP would be a lot of fun, and provides a lot of middle ground for a week in September up there. That's a hunt that has always interested me.

IIRC it's a 2 week ordeal, which even makes it better. I may look into that real hard this fall, I know the have BP criteria. 2nd best timing after archery IMO.

I think they allow modern inlines and such, but no scopes. Something to that effect.

Yeah, some strange rules on ammo type too, but think I will look into it, I like going any season, but 2nd has got so "busy". Tat ML is a great time to be in them hills on the tail of the rut usually

Yeah, that is what it was.
Seems they'd want you to use a better accurate rnd? and I don't see why smoke/no smoke powder has to do with anything? May not be a better round IDK, something I would have to learn over the next few months.

We're a little over 5 weeks away from this hunt. So, I'll start the questions: 1. Daypack and go back for the haul-out pack if I down something, or save a hike and start hunting with the full-blown backpack? 2. Do you carry a small first-aid kit and if so, what's in it? (I carry a survival kit, but was wondering about first-aid.) 3. Any reason to bring a couple of cheap (as in ski-slope type) walkie talkies, other than possibly for the drive up?
I'm sure I'll have more questions, but this is what bubbled to the top of my brain today.

I'm definitely not the elk expert, but I'll take a shot: We're a little over 5 weeks away from this hunt. So, I'll start the questions: 1. Daypack and go back for the haul-out pack if I down something, or save a hike and start hunting with the full-blown backpack?
I'm planning on bringing my frame pack around with a small pack bag attached to it with some basics (water, food, first aid). That way I'll save a trip. If I realize I don't want to haul it around, I can take the pack bag off and use it as a daypack. 2. Do you carry a small first-aid kit and if so, what's in it? (I carry a survival kit, but was wondering about first-aid.)
Yes. Bandaids; packets of antihistamine, aspirin, and ibuprofen; waterproof tape; gauze; tweezers; moleskin; antibiotic ointment. Might have to pick up some of that leukotape to replace the moleskin. I would say if we are buddying up only one person needs to carry one, or we could split it.
3. Any reason to bring a couple of cheap (as in ski-slope type) walkie talkies, other than possibly for the drive up?
There was some chatter earlier about being careful about people listening in to find out where the bulls are. If there's any kind of cell reception we might be better off with texting each other. I'm good either way.
I'm sure I'll have more questions, but this is what bubbled to the top of my brain today.

I'm sure I'll have more questions, but this is what bubbled to the top of my brain today. 1. Start with the day pack and keep it light & down to just necessities (H2O, RF, Boolits, Clif Energy Bars, leave room to store jacket, head lights, batteries, etc. Y'all get up there an start toting around too much and catch a case of altitude sickness your hunt will be a very miserable, yet memorable one. Adjust what you take as you feel it to be necessary. 2. bandaids, duct tape (it has tons of uses) 3. Doesn't hurt, also doesn't hurt for each pairing to rent sat phones.
