I have some CCI Large Rifle Primers, and I have had 2 no fires from them. One on the range and another on a hunt. luckily the second shell fired on the hunt. It kind of turned me off of the whole reloading thing now. So, now for the stupid question... is there anyway to identify a primer that may not detonate? I am pretty sure the answer is no, but I figured I would ask some more experienced loaders.
Thanks, Scooter

No....don't know how you reload so just asking, but what are the chances the primer wasn't seated fully?

I highly doubt the problem is the primers unless you stored them outside next to a water sprinkler...

No, there's no way to know ahead of time. Unless you see the anvil is missing (which I have seen before). Over the years, I've had a few issues with primers not going bang. I have spoken to some ATK tech guys about it. The most common issue with a primer not going off the primer seated at an incorrect depth (too deep or not deep enough). The primer needs to be between .004" and .008" below flush of the case head. Measure your round or rounds that did not fire (or other rounds loaded at the same time) to get a primer depth. The CCI #200 and #250 have been the most sensitive to primer depth that I have found. I had a big issue with some #250 in 338 Lapua not long ago. I use Win primers and Fed primers now.
I also found out that a CCI #250 is between a standard and a magnum primer, and not recommended for the 338 Lapua. I needed to switch to a Fed 215 or Rem mag primer, which are the 2 hottest magnum primers.

ok, I got ya, I am sure there is always the chance they werent seated properly. I will just keep using them and pay extra attention to my primer seating. The rounds are so accurate i really hate to stop using them or altering them now. I suppose 2 out of 300 ish rounds isnt too bad.

It's a good primer. I use them in some of my 308 and other ammo personally.

Always seat primers like a man. In my experience, I have never had a misfire that was caused by the primer being too deep. I have seen plenty that were caused by a primer that wasn't deep enough.
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.
