I have some land close to home that needs some swine removal. I have a complete welding shop and portable welding rig. I have some ideas on what to build for an effective hog trap. I just wanted to know yall's opinion on the best configuration. It can be site built, but I prefer portable. I've heard sping loaded swinging gate, so you can catch multiple hogs. I've heard of making a heart shaped trap out of pannels and put the gate in the crease. What else should I consider?

I built the root gate style trap with a double door. TSC sells one with a triple gate and the idea is they will root the door open but not have to raise the whole thing. Set the trip wire to drop the gate on the first pig and the rest will figure out how to get in. You can use cattle panel as the pen w/ t posts every 4 feet or so. Insert the gate and stake it down to the panels, add bait and wait.
We also have a box trap maybe 10 feet long, 4 feet wide and 4 feet tall with a drop gate in it. It is set using a trip wire and once it slams, no getting out or in. The disadvantage of this style is you might only get a couple at a time vs the corral style where you can catch multiples.
H20thief ------------ Positive thinking may not solve all your problems but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

I have an "Alcatraz" hog trap. It is round, 6' in diameter, 4' tall and has a swing door that goes in and self closes. Completely enclosed top and bottom. It will let more hogs in once tripped but, I haven't seen them be able to get out. I don't know if they make it anymore but here is where I got it Alcatraz Hog Trap . The thing I like most is it is easy to move. you flip it up on the side and roll it around. It rolls into the back of the pickup. One man operation. I've had it for 10+ years and it's still going strong. Made out of ~2" angle iron and heavy duty cattle pannels.

I have always liked the open top traps because if you do get a deer in there by accident it can easily jump out. As for the gate we have a spring on it to close so that you can catch multiple hogs and another gate that is made to use a trip wire set in the back of the trap. The traps are a teardrop shape using cattle pannels and t-posts and the gate at the narrow end. They worked well for us in the past out at my granparents farm.

We've got three on our place. Two of them are the normal traps you would see on here and at Monarch.
The other one is a "number six" we just built about a month ago. I like this one because the other critters don't have a trigger to disengage like the box traps. You have to make sure to really strap it down though because they will bust out of it if you don't. We actually saw two of them bust out Christmas Eve morning. I was not happy.

I built my whole pen around my feeder as a trap with a guillotine door on it. That way if u just want to feed the deer close the door and the hogs cant get in. I have horse fence around the feeder and cattle panels on the inside.

That's a good one. Fortunately I have enough resources to build a more sophisticated one.

Thanks for the help. I didn't see any traps on that link, just blinds, chairs and shooting rests. I was thinking of building a round one though. I have the rolling machine to make large arcs, so why not. I think it would be pretty handy to be able to roll it into place, because I'm usually by myself.

Here is a picture from a couple of weeks ago. Like I said this trap is over 10 years old and going strong.
