I've only hog hunted private land with feeders and blinds set up but am looking to hunt a few public land places in east texas. Most these places don't allow baiting. What's the best way to go about this? Pick a place that looks to be high traffic and sit? Wonder with the wind in your face? Please any tips would help

Hmm, that could be tough road but here's what I would suggest. First choice is to hunt at night (if allowed). Wait for the noise then hit them with the lights. The other choice would be to hunt with a partner and walk the creek beds. During the day they will pretty much always be close to water along creek beds depending on how much water is in the area. Good luck and stay alert!

I've chased them on Sam Houston NF, but haven't got a shot at one yet. It's illegal to hunt them at night and like the other guy said go down to creek bottoms and anywhere brush is thick. The real issue is the thick brush. I've gotten real close to them several times but they can simply stroll away without ever being seen. Good luck.

Over on texasbowhunter they talk about getting together and doing drives a lot. Check the granger thread out over there, lots of info to be learned just by reading!

Sam Houston National Forest is a good spot to go if you are near Houston. It is really the only place to go unless you have an airboat to run the swamps. I joined this forum to learn and pick up info and this is my first post. Last year was my first year where I got serious about Hunting and spent some time tracking hogs in the SHNF. 1st thing is to wait for deer season to end because the wardens are everywhere and it is hard enough to hunt in the Park so I just let the deer boys have their fill and then it is my turn to have the whole forest all to myself after deer season. last year I spent approximately 10-12 days hunting and learning the forest. Of those 10 days I saw hogs on 4 occasions and took shots twice and saw deer on almost every occasion. Also 1 bobcat that chased off the pigs I was seconds away from shankin! My technique is to go scout a day before hand and just try to find the freshest tracks and wallows that is down in the bottomlands. I have tried to stalk and find them and never saw a hog this way. All of my spottings have been while sitting and waiting in a high traffic area. I got this one which is my first hog and kill ever. My problem now is that it is all I think about!!! I have the bug badly and watch hunting shows almost exclusively now. I am already studying the topo maps I found free online and planning my next few days unfortunately for me it will be January 20th again when deer season ends and nobody is left in the woods at all. Which is perfect! Oh yeah I am hoping to see sasquatch also since that is teh #1 area in Texas for sightings. I may be famous come next Spring with my first sasquatch kill!!!

Bigfoot...How are you getting them out of Sam Houston? This will be my first year hunting there, and I am still new to the hunting game!

If the hog is edible and isnt rank I will take the hams and backstrap and throw them in a commercial heavy duty trash bag to haul out and let the buzzards and coyotes have the rest.
I really dont plan to hunt deer in the forest but for them I think you have to gut them and pull the whole carcass out to take to a deer check in station.

A couple of weeks in Sept. and after deer season is the only time you can hunt hogs on Cooper WMA. Then it's bow and shotgun only. That being said there are a lot of hogs behind the dam and in the Hwy 71 bottoms on the far west end of the lake.

You can hunt them at night at LBJ grasslands
I eat everything I kill and I am to fat to be a bad hunter.
