...or in other words, a smith who knows how to work on Mausers - you know, those old fashioned bolt thingys, with old fashioned wooden stocks... smile

I have one old custom that belonged to Dad, and is supposed to be a .25-06, but when I tried factory ammo in it, the round stopped dead an inch short of chambering. Based on what I've learned about the history it needs to be checked out thoroughly. The second is a FN Mauser Supreme that needs some slight customization.

I am in Houston, but frequently go through the Austin area. No rush on the work.

You tried the Gun Smith at Carter's on Katy Frwy?

I can't stand it...." Uh Houston? we have a problem! " bolt

My nephew (from Houston) uses a guy in LaGrange in "downtown" he thinks highly of...but his free time is spent at the cabin on the south side of Lake Fayetteville too, so who knows how good he is.

Sounds like what you need is for someone to make a lead casting of the chamber, so the exact dimensions can be measured and see exactly what you've got there. Not a difficult job, but can be a little time consuming.

smile I was hoping to find a guy who had successfully fixed other Mausers for people & would give references for them. Carter's would certainly be convenient but never used them for this kind of work before. The round does drop all the way into the chamber, but for some reason it hangs up feeding out of the magazine. In no way a valuable rifle, except sentimental.

I am in no way a gunsmith, but I hear about a "condition" that may or may not be at play here...Mauser designs are known to have "timing" problems ie from what I understand ...all the feed and extraction parts are not functioning together as they should. And it takes someone who is a real GunSmith and not just a Gun Mechanic to resolve the issue....or could be as simple as the claw extractor is busted and not dropping over the rim during feeding.

In Dallas I'd send you to someone who has graduated either from the 2 year program at the Gun Smith School at the Colorado School of Mines, or the similar program at UTEP.

For a local referal in Houston, you might call Doc Jones in Carrollton, a grad of the CSM program and see if he can recc someone down there. Or I'd call Bill Wiseman in College Station, a national level 'Smith, might be worth the hike to CS.

Gotta be someone handier in your end of Texas, but this is the kind of issue that Doc Jones is noted for fixing fast....and he is NOT FAST this time of the year for sure.

It's been 25 years since I was working the Gun Bidnizz Trade in Houston, or anywhere else, so I am out of touch - careful there ya'll, already been called delusional last month and don't need to start this month the same way -... but there was a great guy in Pasadena?? in an old Movie Theatre I used to sell SAKO's to...if I can find his Bidnizz card in my archives I'll let you know.

I'd remove the bolt and look down into the chamber from the breech end. There might be the forward section of a separated case stuck in there.

There's one up here in Wiley but that's a haul for ya. I'll try and find him. My buddy has had some absolute tack drivers from Mausers, one of them I sold him and he won't sell back! Lol

Thanks, I'll talk to him.

I did find out that a different brand of factory ammo fed better. And the rifle shoots okay. It probably still needs attention to get it feeding well.

shooting buddy of mine is a mauser fanatic, it surprising what you find with some of the customs, case in point, he recently bought a .270, turned out to be a .270CCC , which is similar to .270gibbs

Try calling Gary Kretser at Victoria All Sports. He's been a gunsmith for 50 years and is not too far from Houston 361-575-0655

I love Mausers and was building on an 1915 Oberndorf GEW 98 (my father purchased the action back in the 60’s). Unfortunately I had some work done at a local gun shop in Garland where it was almost butchered by an idiot grinding on the action. I shipped the action and barrel to David. A few days later he called me, introduced himself and in 15 min fix the issue over the phone. He also did some other work on the action as part of the build and when I got it back it was flawless. Good man and excellent work up
