If we can ever get Perry and the legislature to quit diverting TPWD funds (Hunting and Fishing License fees, APH and Draw Hunt Revenue, Camping and Gate Fees, etc) Federal money (Lacey, Dingell-Johnson, Voluntary Public Access And Habitat Incentives Program, Pittman Robertson Act excise tax on Gun, Ammo related) into the state general black hole to balance the budget, Just maybe we can have another nice park and some draw hunt here also.

Residents in Strawn are hoping the long-planned Palo Pinto Mountains State Park will eventually provide a boost to the small town’s economy.

Outdoor enthusiasts, meanwhile, are looking forward to the day they’ll have a new state park about an hour west of Fort Worth.

Both groups, however, are likely going to have to wait a few years for the the 4,390-acre park to open its gates.

While a public hearing is scheduled for Thursday to discuss where to locate trails and place bathhouses, there is no clear time line when the park, which straddles Palo Pinto and Stephens counties, will be completed. Strawn’s website says the tentative date for an opening is 2018.

“A lot of that is going to depend on the funding allocated to Parks and Wildlife to build a park,” said Chris Beckcom, a Texas Parks and Wildlife park planner. “We can do the planning, but to fund the development — we’re talking millions of dollars.”

The meeting in Strawn will provide the first look at the proposed facilities and recreational uses for the park. The state agency will also take feedback about its plans for the park.

The Future of Texas State Parks? It’s All About the Money
Quote:
snip:
“If you’re raising $260 million, and you’re using 25 percent of that for its intended purpose, and then you’re back-loading to certify the budget the balance of it — Well, then you’re leaving your parks out.”

The situation was even worse for parks a few years back when the department’s budget was slashed along with those of most other state agencies.

This year, lawmakers restored much of that money, but came nowhere close to providing enough for park upgrades, to say nothing of acquiring more parkland.

JEH, Thanks for the up dates on this project and others. You are the only voice as far as I can tell doing your best to keep us informed. Do you have a location where this acreage is?

I've hunted some just north of Strawn, one time as a guest of my nephew at the NWest corner of Hwy 16 & 108, and for several years on a small 2 man lease east of Hwy 16 at the corner of the Eastland-Erath County Line.

Never saw lot of Big Deer, but we always went home with Venison.
With proper Bio Mangement a SP/WMA Hunt should generate better than average Success %'s.

I would love to be able to check this place out. Palo pinto mountains are darn sure pretty, and not too far from us in Erath county. They need to leave OUR money ALONE.

I believe you can get a permit through one of the towns(either Mingus or Strawn) to fish on Tucker Lake.....Not sure. I read about this a few years ago.

Rep. Larson sees an opportunity for just that in the next year’s statewide elections.

“Talk to the folks that are running for office, and talk to them about parks,” Larson said. “Are they committed to stopping the diversion of the sporting good tax?”

Ron, I am not familiar with the area but I bet google map would show Tucker Lake. Seems they keep a lot of this information hidden from the public? Such as Eagle Moutain SP sales $ and the purchase of Tucker Lake area $. Maybe somebody else can fill us in on what they are doing with our money?

Is it illegal for the Texas government to divert Federal Pittman-Robertson money to the state's general fund?
It seems impossible that it's not.

http://www.strawntx.com/state-park.html

The newest state park in Texas, Palo Pinto Mountains State Park, is located in the Western Cross Timbers Ecoregion of North Central Texas. The new park offers a great diversity of topography, as well as a great variety of plants and wildlife.

The park consists of 3,331 acres of land in the southwest corner of Palo Pinto County and extending into the southeast corner of Stephens County. The nearest town to the park is the picturesque community of Strawn, which will serve as the gateway to the park.
