Academy sells a hand-held one for around $100. It has worked fine for me.

Why the hell should I have to press 1 for English!!??

I use a Lowrance. I believe the model is GPS72 but I would have to double check to be certain. I use it for fishing and hunting. It is waterproof.

I have a garmin GPS76, it is a little bulky, but i like it lot. It is water-resistant (from the boat capsizing earlier this year) and shock proof (falling off the tailgate of a moving truck after getting dry from boat capsizing). zzbutler has the garmin 60c, which is a nice compact GPS with color screen and at least water resistant (see previous boat capsizing). I would look for one that allows USB connectivity, instead of serial.

I do not know about other brands, but garmin will get you on the topo and lake maps you have to buy ($100 a set).

It's not skybusting, if you make the shot.

Has anybody used the eTrex. I know it is not top of the line but will it get you back and forth and help pinpoint loc's on a map

The eTrex is a good little unit, but not as fine as the Vista which is the same size, The vista will do it all and is USB ready, you can also get MapSource Topo and Fishing Hotspots for this unit as a package so you only have to buy it one time. Garmin provides software up dates on line at no cost. Try www.Garmin.com for info but don't buy it on line there, you can shop for better prices other places.

Team Hillbilly
I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left.

I have the e-Trek Legend C and I love it. It has the auto-routing capability with the City Select software. I used it to find addresses when I make service calls.

24 hours in a day.
24 beers in a case.
Coincidence, I think not.

Meant to say thanks Team Hillbilly and Baby Arm. I am sure those other units are better but think I want to keep the price down on the first unit I buy. Sounds like the eTrex unit around $100 will do for now.

The little yellow etrek is a good unit.
I've been using mine for about 3 years
any time I go into the deep woods or
unfamiliar areas. Get out of the truck
and mark the "waypoint" and I'm set.
No maps or such but will do all the important
stuff.
Mark a "waypoint" and will point you back there
and give distance (as the crow flies).
Keep multiple waypoints for future use.
"Tracking" feature shows exact path direction taken
and actual distance traveled. Good for returning via
the same path.
GPS coordinates (handy for use with map websites)
Correct time for your location.
Sunrise/sunset time for exact location.
Speedometer

It will only give compass direction if you are
moving but it is ALWAYS a good idea to use any
GPS unit in conjunction with a good compass anyway.

For $100.00 this unit gets 2 thumbs up.
