I have access to hunt a new duck pond this season. I have asked the owner if I can plant some millet around it but he is a little hesitant since he doesnt know what millet is. Are there any negative side effects of for him (as a cattle rancher) from the millet I plant? He will start running cattle on the place, but not until next spring. Will it "take over the pond" or spread uncontrollably or anything unfavorable for a cattle rancher? I have never planted it before so any info is appreciated.

No negative effects I don't think, but his cows will love eating it.

That's what I was thinking, but since I have never actually planted it before I just wanted to make sure there isn't something I wasn't aware of.

Tell him to put an electric fence around it or the cows will eat every last bit of it!

Tell him to put an electric fence around it or the cows will eat every last bit of it! Yeah, if he's running cattle I wouldn't even mess with millet...unless you're getting some steak

Tell him to put an electric fence around it or the cows will eat every last bit of it! I'd becareful with that, A) electricity and water don't mix B) landowner might not be real happy about cutting off some or all of that water hole from his cows

I have use electric fence to keep cows out, it's a pain. I planted millet 2008 to 2011, four seasons. It only paid off 1 season. Just not worth it. If you can let water out, plant, preferable irrigate somehow, then pump water to flood it a week before season it would be worth messing with. On my lease, I can let water out, but not pump, so not worth the risk to let water out.
That being said, I'm thinking about planting millet this year, first time in 2 seasons, namely because my land owner has no cows now, so it can grow. But I will not let water out. Water is like gold.

I'm about to add a berm and thinking of planting millet once the dozer is done. Won't be able to irrigate it but there is no water there no so it's not hurting anything to try it. I'm like you Guy, I would really hesitate to let water out.
