Any of you guys hunt elk in Wyoming? I am going to put in for Wyoming in 2015. I have hunted Colorado but my dad and I want to try Wyoming. Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

I buy points there for a future hunt. Haven't been there, yet.

It takes at least 6 points for a non-resident to a tag. That's six years worth!!! You can go on the Wyoming website and get the draw results by year. It will prove my point. That's why I go to Colorado and get an over the counter tag. Wyoming started perferance points in 2006. Hardest State to get a tag.

Turkeyman, I'd say AZ is the hardest state to draw near ANY tag.
I havent hunted Wyoming either, but there was a thread here with the same Question and it had allot of great info.
Sneaky, You've been here for a while, know how to find that thread?

You'd have to use the search function. I would, but I'm not very good at it and don't know what thread you're talking about.

Yeah, it never works for me, either.
I don't recall which thread it was.

There are some elk tags in Wyoming that require quite a few points for a guaranteed draw, but tags for general areas can be drawn every other year at a minimum with a reasonable chance of drawing every year.

The past 3.5 weeks it's been daily bait checking, filling, and moving both barrels and cameras. All of which has to be done on foot because many of the baiting sites had no access by 4-wheeler and if they did I would rather hike in to keep human smells to a minimum. It took several weeks to finally find the sweet spot where the decent sized bears were coming in. Was shooting the bear easy? Yes, but the labor leading up to the harvest was strenuous work. Elk is hard in a different kind of way because the difficulty is not in prepping for the hunt, like a bear, but in the actual process of hunting the bull.

Just messing with ya, but yes, that bull will take a lot more work during the hunt itself.

It took 7 points to draw an Elk Tag in Unit 61 this year. You are extremely lucky to get a landowner tag because that's the only way you would get one. Who's the landowner???

I look at the website statistics. I typically factor the likelihood of drawing into the process of figuring out where I want to go. I have drawn in Colorado without preference points. The last time I drew there was a medical issue in the family so I couldn't go. I had to send my tags back get refunded and go the following over the counter hunt. Entirely too many people on the mountain. Also, on opening morning, there were some PETA activists. At a little before legal light there were 17 shots in about a minute and a half. The game wardens were after them, but not sure if they caught them.

If you go to Wyoming go with Triple Three Outfitters, or Tangle Ridge Outfitters. You will not be sorry. Nothing but great reviews on any of the hunting sites
