I am getting back into archery after few year's absence and thinking of buying and rigging up a new bow. The last bow I bought was 14 years ago. When I look up the names of the accessories people are recommending I am shocked at how much they cost. Bowsights in particular are surprising. There are sights today approaching the price of some of the bows I bought in the past. I used to hunt with a sight that cost $30 or $40. Now, most sights are many times that cost. What is the reason for the steep rise in price? Also, can anyone recommend sights for those of us with limited budgets?

As a dealer for both Black Gold and Spot Hogg sights I am often asked why a bowhunter should spend $150 (or more)for a bow sight when a $50 sight works just fine.

I think it depends on what your expectations are from your bow sight, or any other archery accessory for that matter.

The high-end sights are manufactured from lighter, stronger material and are cut to closer tolerances. That gives you is repeatability, easy of adjustment, durability and peace of mind that your sight is less likely to fail due to unexpected events (dropping, hitting something, etc.)

Cheaply made equipment will work fine - under ideal conditions? It is when things are not idea that I believe the value of “over engineered” equipment becomes worth the price.

For over twenty years, I fished bass tournaments and I always insisted on the best “stuff” I could afford. I could not afford to have an equipment failure so; I controlled that as best I could by insisting on the best, not necessarily the most expensive.

Hunting is no different. My time in the field is limited. Equipment failure is not an option. Spending another $100 on a great sight vs. a “get by” sight is worth it to me. If you can “afford” to lose a weekend hunt because you dropped you bow and screwed up your equipment, then buy the lesser-made stuff. If you cannot afford to lose time in the field, then buy the well-made stuff to improve your odds.

I feel similarly about my equipment, and making the most of my time outdoors.

I am a big fan of the Spot Hogg sights. The craftsmanship is superior, it is made here in the USA, fibers are bright, you can order it in any configuration you want, and if you want to change anything (or lose a screw like I did), their customer service is out of this world.

Another humongous feature that cheap sights do not have, is 3rd axis adjustment. If you shoot from elevated positions, you will find that often times your sight is off a bit. Once you've properly adjusted your 3rd axis, this will never be an issue.

I personally use an Axcel Amortech. I couldn't afford that when I started bowhunting. Heck until the last few years I would have argued how one doesn't need a great sight like that. For many years I had a truglo sight I had to resight during cold weather as it would contract in the colder weather. Many times "the best" is the best you can afford at the time. It will still get you out and hunt. Chances are if one can only afford an $80 sight he won't be taking a $10K hunting trip and worry about his sight in Alaska or Africa. And sometimes losing a weekend hunting at the lease because of equipment failure is the best way for one to learn what works and what doesn't. I hate to see a new hunter discouraged and not get into it if they can't afford a $2000 set up right out the gate.

I bought my first bow a few months ago and already had to upgrade the sight. It came with a $30-40 Truglo that I wasn't fond of. The pins were too thick and I just wasn't a fan of how it adjusted. So I dropped 120 or 130 on a Viper with smaller pins and an adjustable bar. I like it much better.

I agree 100%; trust me when I say I've tried a lot of sights, and for my money it's hard to beat Spot Hogg.

I have been looking at the trophy ridge react. Reviews are good. Set your 20 and 30 yd pin and it auto sets your 40, 50, 60 by itself.

Anything that has "Auto" is subject to fail; I just don't think I'd ever leave a 47 yard shot on a 200 class buck up to a mechanical instrument. I know that the five pins on my Spot Hogg are dead on, one less thing to worry about.
The difficulty factor is high enough in archery, I'd just hate to add one more to it.

I hear you on the Auto aspect but it is mathematically correct. The pins are fixed not floating. I am not saying you should not check it at 60 yds but I know a few guys that bought them and once set were popping 40, 50, an 60 without touching the pins.. It just knows the next drop between pins based off previous pin sets. Not many folks have a pin set at 47 yds so everyone would have a little over or under hold, even your spot hog. . I dont work for them but it is nice and affordable at around 129 on ebay.

You have to have your feeders set up right to get them in ten yard increments. I have circles drawn on the ground and wait until they stand in them to take a shot.

Why didn't I think of that Passthru; I'll have to tell the deer in states where feeders are not allowed to stand in the circle And not move.

If you get on archerytalk you can find really good deals in the classifieds. I just picked up a $160 rest for $70 the other day and it was very lightly used. Lots of guys on there who buy and sell stuff all the time. I don't have that kind of money so I take advantage of the deals they offer when they are ready for something new.
