I have found that disturbing Hogs upon a gunshot is subjective to levels of ambient noise they are used to.

In the following videos, we were able to stalk and make multiple kills in the same field within minutes of each other. However, most of the time, the Hogs run and the fun begins.

I have a few good take aways from this thread:

The "Thwap" on the hogs end is considerable

Shortening a barrel to account for overall length with a can meaning SBR'ing a rifle and putting a can on to be at around 22 inches overall will increase the sound/report from the muzzle thus lessening the overall advantage of a can when opting for that route.

The hogs conditioning to ambient sounds "magic thunder" may in fact allow for followup shots on other hogs in the area. Meaning NOTHING is definite with regards to use of surpressors and expected actions of hogs.

I can't wait to complete the process for the .30 cal FEMUR and conduct similar field testing as outlined here with a 300 BO (supersonic and subsonic) and a 6x45mm (supersonic only).

I have not noticed a drastic increase in sound when using a suppressor on a SBR. Especially the 300BLK. The second shooter in the vid was shooting a 8.5" SBR Blackout with a 7" Hooper Ordnance FEMUR Titanium suppressor, with super sonic 110 gr ammo.

BTW another plus when using a suppressor is if using night vision, it does not bloom out your nods as bad if any and no need for ear muffs.

There is some debate on whether or not you still need muffs. Suppressors only suppress so far. The noise from the rifle may still be at levels where hearing protection should be worn. My Grendel with a AAC suppressor on it still rings my ears if I don't have hearing protection. If the sound is loud enough to do that, it is loud enough to do damage. The damage is mitigated compared to going unsuppressed, no doubt, but pulses in the 120-130+ range are still likely damaging to the ears.

Suppressors reduce your risk, but especially with supersonic ammo, certainly do not remove the risk of hearing damage.

I do not notice any ringing while shooting mine. But I've been shooting since I was about five and have lost a good amount of hearing myself.

The SPL is taken to the side of the muzzle, the position of the ear canal of the shooter which is several feet behind the muzzle reduces the actual SPL the shooter would feel since the ear canal is pointing to the side not forward.

I do not have any ringing after shooting my 5.56 with the suppressor attached.

I would not stand around without hearing protection if someone was shooting an unsuppressed ar15 near me. The flash hider directs the blast wave up and to the sides. Best place is behind the shooter, and it is still loud.

Let's see.....you can buy an oil filter at AutoZone for $10. You can buy a muffler at Meineke for $100. Yet with almost identical technology, a suppressor costs $2000, and that's after you jump through legal hoops to get permission from Big Brother. And regarding hearing protection, you can buy a little baggie full of foam ear plugs for you and your buddies for $2.

A famous circus promoter once said, "There's a sucker born every minute." For the price of a can, a guy can buy himself another VERY nice scoped rifle or make a significant down payment on a guided big game hunt out west.

It HAS to be the Cool Factor, this suppressor fad, otherwise no one would be working up such a faunch for one. Of course, we are all free to spend our money as the spirit moves us. Just don't let Momma know what it costs, or you're gonna find $2000 worth of new furniture in the living room when you get home from your hog hunt.

Okay, so the hogs don't need hearing protection despite the loud thwack they hear. Their exposure is minimal and the impact on their lives is brief...corresponding with the remaining length of their lives.

All said and done my suppressor cost me $740 including the cost of the tax stamp and it has been the best accessory I have bought. I doubt I will ever shoot unsuppressed again.

I doubt a car muffler is made from high end metals nor are its components machined and designed to be compact and efficient.

Oh, and those foam ears plugs you speak of for $2 only cost about $.03 to make. I'd say your examples of profit margins are not good. The oil filters are mass produced as well and stamped out for less than $1.

I feel you have no idea what it takes to run a business. There are things to consider like advertising, overhead, employees, insurance, etc..

If big brother would get out of the equation and the local Walmart could sell them over the counter the prices would go down.

I waited years to buy my first suppressor they were too expensive and you could not hunt with them at the time. Now I own five and will be acquiring more with no regrets.

If big brother would get out of the equation I think you would find rifles and pistols made suppressed at walmart. I don't know any one that has suppressors and likes to shoot without them.

Would you be willing to take on an apprentice and teach me? I had no idea all those years when I just barely muddled along. We'll have to wait until August 16th, when I get home from 3 weeks in Africa though.
