Way cool. The fawns are probably different colors because a set of whitetail "twins" often have different fathers.

Fraternal twins-two separate eggs, and could certainly be fertilized by different bucks.

Thanks to everyone for the comments. Glad you enjoyed the photos. Kind of unusual about the twins. As the darker fawn got older it seemed to lighten up just a bit. Saw the fawn almost every day for about 3 months. After about 3 months old the fawn seemed to leave the area. Can't say that I ever saw it again. I read some years ago that Comal county has about 3 % melanistic deer.

Must have been a real dominant melanistic buck way back in the day in that area. I have been hearing and seeing those dark deer down there since I went to college there in the mid 90's.
