When you use an electronic call do you continuously run sounds or take a few minute break in between calls? I'm fairly new to coyote hunting and I'm curious what people have had the most success with.

Normally I use a locator when I am first getting set up. I do just a few barks and then wait about 30 min or better before I start using my distress calls. When using the distress calls, I usually run them for about 10 minutes and then take a 20-30 minute pause, run another 10 minutes and pause and so on. This has proven well for me so far. There may be other alternatives, just my $0.02.

I run it for about 2-3 minutes and then wait 5-10 minutes. Repeat for 30 minutes. If nothing showed up in that amount of time I'm moving to another spot.

Run it non stop. It's well proven that canines do NOT have a sense of time, they can't tell the difference between 3 seconds and 3 hours.

Kind of what I expected, different strokes for different folks. I've seen people call both ways and be successful, guess I'll just have to try both and see what works better for me. So far I've mainly called continuously but I will try it with breaks in between and be patient.

Chupa Interesting, I will try that next time. Any particular sounds favored over others right now?

There is no one right way to call coyotes! There are many ways to get one to respond and there and many ways to aleart them to your presence! I have called them in with a minute and a half sequence with a 2-3 minute pause while scanning and I have called them in with constant calling! I almost always use latex diaphragm calls so usually I will put a few pauses in to catch my breath and scan! I always try to create a scenario that I think sounds like a real life scenario! I feel like if I can recreate something the coyote may have heard before it will know there is a meal at the source of the screams! For example, the small lungs of a rabbit keep it from making long drawn out screams and they very likely would not sceam at max volume continuously for extended periods of time! They would likely shreak loudly with short shrill screams when first attacked and then would fade! And then, as if a hawk has them penned and is ripping at their hind quaters, would shreak intensly every so often until dying! Like Chupa mentioned, predators don't wear a watch so they don't know that the rabbit has been dying for a bit too long! So really either way will work! Give it a shot and use what works best for you!

Dont over think it. Dont put human logic and reasoning to it. Coyotes cannot reason. Rule #1, Getting in to your stand without blowing the whole setup is the most important part. Pay attention to the wind. Rule #2, Keep your movement to a minimum. Start calling as soon as you are set up and comfortable. Call continuous. Change the volume and sound to your liking, but keep it running. If you got nothing in 15 min, move on. If a coyote is within earshot and hungry, they will most likely come to the call anywhere from 20 seconds to 15 minutes. When you are done with that stand, get up and look around, especially behind you. There might be a curious yote sitting somewhere you couldnt see and was just watching you. Might get a parting shot.

Just the other night one came in with a yote about 30 yards behind it. Deer ran off once it detected the yote, but it makes for interesting hunts.

Right now is also the hardest time of the year to call them. There is plenty of food everywhere. Most of them are getting their fill on grasshoppers.
